Title: Transit Business Intelligence Analyst

Purpose: The Transit Business Intelligence Analyst works with data generated by various systems throughout the agency to provide ad-hoc and recurring statistical analyses, reports, dashboards, and other data visualizations that assist staff in making process improvements and policy changes that improve transit service reliability and efficiency. In addition, this position will automate existing and new reporting processes while supporting existing automated data flows and report distributions.

Reports to: Enterprise Systems Manager

Job Functions:

  • Compile, organize, develop, and distribute reports to internal and external customers (such as Board members, executive leadership, department heads, frontline staff, and the general public) using tools such as Power BI, Power BI Paginated Reports, SQL queries, Power Automate, and Excel
  • Create automated data flows, models, reports, dashboards, and visualizations, including querying/extracting, cleaning, transforming, consolidating, and joining data from across multiple data sources. Example data sources include but are not limited to relational databases, spreadsheets, CSV files, Access databases, online data sources, etc.
  • Develop and deploy real-time data visualizations using production database application data to support the Operations and Maintenance Departments in monitoring and managing service, including preventing and/or mitigating service disruptions and reliability issues
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff and system vendors to identify and resolve issues and errors with source data
  • Work with departments to implement data collection processes that improve accuracy while automating existing recurring report generation to the extent possible.
  • Support the development, definition, implementation, and monitoring of performance metrics and KPIs
  • Respond to ad-hoc requests for data analyses and visualizations
  • Conduct detailed statistical and trend analyses
  • Lead the incorporation of Business Intelligence and Data Visualization tools into daily operations across departments, including providing training to agency staff
  • Work closely with Information Technology and Database Administrators to obtain required database access for use by reporting platforms and querying tools
  • Assist in the calculation and preparation of data and reports for the National Transit Database
  • With the Senior Systems Analyst, use data to provide support to other departments in the development of effective Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), root cause analyses, and continuous process improvement initiatives.
  • Proactively identify significant trends and correlations and independently investigate and determine likely contributing factors

Required Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree* or higher in Mathematics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Analysis, Data Science, Database Administration, or a related field
      • Candidates with an Associates degree and otherwise exceptional qualifications may be considered
  • Working knowledge of relational databases, including the ability to quickly become familiar with complex database schemas involving a large number of tables and fields
  • Intermediate to advanced experience using SQL for data extraction and analysis
  • Intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel
  • Experience creating reports and dashboards using data visualization tools such as Power BI and/or Tableau
  • Ability to distill the results of complex analyses into clear, non-technical language
  • Strong communications and presentation skills and an ability to effectively collaborate with staff, stakeholders, and vendors

Additional Preferred Experience and/or Qualifications:

  • Public Transit Operations
  • Project Management, especially for IT-related projects
  • Training and Staff Management
  • Previous work experience with Data Warehouses
  • GIS analysis using tools such as ArcGIS
  • Programming, especially Python
  • Predictive analytics
  • At least two years of directly relevant job history is preferred, but candidates with strong academic credentials and relevant independent research/project/internship experience will be considered.
