Job Description
The EMT performs technical emergency medical work in the field. The major challenge for this position is to perform basic life support treatments and assist the Paramedic in the spirit of teamwork. After appropriate training this position may perform other technical rescue functions. The incumbent must be able to work under stress and initiate appropriate life saving measures and perform physical activity which requires a full range of body movement, often in uncontrolled, potentially dangerous situations. The role may include other responsibilities and duties as assigned to meet Daviess Community Hospital EMS needs.
Duties Include:
- Able to triage, assess, extricate (if applicable) and treat injured and sick persons.
- Loads and transports patients from a point of pick-up to the vehicle and from the vehicle to the point of destination; this includes lifting patients to and from backboard, stretcher, or equivalent, and maneuvering patients through hallways, up and down stairways, and up and down vehicle/handicap ramps as required.
- Follows direction of Paramedics, MDOs and administrative personnel.
- Life support, airway management, oxygen therapy, venous access, shock prevention, splinting, spinal immobilization, and vehicular extraction.
- Ability to establish patient airway with oral and naso-pharyngeal airways.
- Able to ventilate a patient with mask/ambu bag, when necessary.
- Is responsible, at all times, for the care and transportation of patients treated and for the accurate documentation and timely completion of all required paperwork.
- Immobilizes extremities on trauma patients; applies direct pressure to control hemorrhaging.
- Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
- Able to assess pain and provide pain management.
- Performs and assists with technical skills as defined in the scope of practice.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
- Adheres to ambulance policies addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.
Qualifications
Licensure/Certification requirements:
- Indiana EMT Certification
- Driver’s license
- BLS Healthcare Provider
Education requirements:
- Must complete ITLS, AMLS, and CEVO within 1 year of hire date.
- High School Graduate or Equivalent
Experience requirements:
- One year full time or two years part time or volunteer EMS experience
Other requirements:
- Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages preferred.
- Basic computer knowledge.
