Job Description
The Director of Nursing is responsible for overseeing the nursing staff at the Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) and ensuring the delivery of high-quality nursing care across all levels of care. This hybrid role combines administrative duties with direct nursing responsibilities. The Director will audit documentation, identify areas for improvement, provide training, manage scheduling, and participate in hiring and termination decisions. This position is open to internal candidates only.
Essential Job Functions
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Oversee and manage the nursing staff, ensuring adherence to best practices and regulatory standards.
- Audit nursing documentation to ensure accuracy, compliance, and quality of care.
- Identify areas for improvement in nursing processes and implement programs to address these needs.
- Provide training and development opportunities for nursing staff to enhance their skills and knowledge.
- Manage scheduling to ensure adequate nursing coverage across all shifts and levels of care.
- Participate in hiring and termination decisions for nursing personnel.
- Collaborate with the medical director and other departments to ensure seamless nursing care integration.
- Develop and implement strategies to improve patient care and nursing operations.
- Work 20 hours per week in an administrative capacity and additional hours in a direct care role as needed.
Classification and Schedule
This position is classified as a full-time exempt position, with a regular schedule of 40 hours per week.
The Director of Nursing will fill one of the current vacancies at the unit during the day shift.
Additional details of the schedule expectations are outlined below:
- 20 hours per week dedicated to administrative responsibilities.
- Additional hours as needed for direct nursing care.

Compensation
Base Rate
- $95,000.00 per year
- Additional 1% per year for proven direct management experience, up to 5%
Shift Coverage
When necessary, the DON may be required to cover vacant shifts beyond the 40-hour work week. When this occurs, the DON will be compensated on an hourly basis calculated using the current Registered Nurse (RN) wage structure's emergency rate. The current RN hourly rate is $34.00 plus 1% for each year of licensed experience. The emergency rate is calculate at the time and a half of the base rate 15%. For example, a nurse earning $34.00 per hour would earn $58.65 as the emergency rate ($34 15% x 1.5).
Shift Differential
This position is eligible for shift differentials during graveyard and weekend shifts when covering vacant shifts. Hours worked during graveyard (5 pm - 5 am) and during all weekend shifts are eligible for a 15% differential.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills
Required
- Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Utah.
- Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience.
- Strong leadership and management skills.
- Computer literacy and ability to learn and apply new systems.
Preferred
Preference for candidate's with a bachelor's of nursing degree or business management degree from an accredited university in addition to RN licensure.
Formal management training is also a plus.
Strong preference for previous management experience, specifically with nursing or healthcare.
Experience working in behavioral health settings is preferred.

Preference will be given for applicants who are fluent in Spanish, but this is not a requirement for employment in this opening.
The selected candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment criminal background check and drug screening. DBH will not hire individuals currently using illegal drugs or abusing alcohol; therefore, making employment at DBH conditional upon successfully passing pre-employment drug screening by providing a valid sample. Candidates who are offered employment are required to report for a drug screen at an Intermountain WorkMed location within 24 hours of being requested to do so by the DBH Human Resources Department.
