Description

The Maintenance Mechanic will oversee the performance and maintenance of multiple production machines. Besides the repair and troubleshooting of equipment, the maintenance mechanic will support with preventive maintenance and equipment setup when changing part numbers.

Essential Functions

  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections and service on machines.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and/or replace mechanical components such as motors, gear boxes, drive chains, sprockets, sheaves, pulleys, rollers, conveyor belts, bearings, and screws.
  • Repair/troubleshoot hydraulic cylinders, flow problems, solenoids, and pumps.
  • Partners up with Engineering and other technicians to order and install replacement parts for machines.
  • Work with Operations to identify the causes of unexpected breakdowns of machines and to maintain equipment running efficiently.
  • Performs installation of new equipment. Aligns machines and equipment using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, micrometers, and plumb bobs.
  • Make minor wiring repairs and troubleshoot basic electrical issues
  • Repair, install and dismantle machinery and equipment according to plans which involves working at heights, climbing ladders, and using mobile equipment (cranes, forklift, scissor lift, etc.).
  • Read blueprints & wiring diagrams for the installation & repair of equipment and the facility.
  • Maintain a safe work area.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • This is an on-site, full-time, non-exempt position. Workdays are Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM until 3:00 PM, with a 30-minute, unpaid lunch.
  • Departmental demands may necessitate additional work outside of the standard work hours.

Skills

  • Mechanically inclined with great problem-solving skills.
  • Basic knowledge of PLC and HMI functions.
  • Ability to properly operate band saws, torch, drill presses, grinders and other shop tools
  • Works well independently and with others.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and stressful environment.
  • Basic mathematical skills used to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and use decimals and fractions
  • Proficient with use of power tools, measuring devices, lathe and/or milling machinery.
  • Capable of reading and interpreting electrical schematics.
  • Basic to Intermediate Electrical skills are a plus.
  • Welding/fabrication skills are a plus.

Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Some vocational or community college with related coursework, preferred.
  • 3 years’ experience working in Electromechanics, Industrial Maintenance or relevant field.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Previous experience using bearing heaters, interference fits, and/or removing gear boxes or seized bearings/shafts.
  • Weaving and/or loom experience, a plus

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Travel

Must be able to travel between Darco sites, both located in Independence, VA.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. independently.
  • Ability to tolerate prolonged periods of walking, standing, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing ladders, or kneeling.
  • At times, work in confined spaces
  • Able to visually inspect machines
  • Able to perform both gross and fine manipulation

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • The work facility may be hot and/or cold, based on the time of year.
  • Many areas of the production floor have a very high noise level. Hearing protection is required in these areas.
  • Regularly work near moving mechanical parts.
  • Tolerate regular contact with fiberglass and fiberglass fibers.
