Position Summary:

The Motor Vehicle Clerk processes the registration, collection of sales tax, and licensing of all types of motorized vehicles, assists the public by providing a variety of information, and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local statutes, rules, and regulations.

Essential Job Functions

  • Operate a computer for direct data entry of motor vehicle assessment, title, and registration information.
  • Receive and assist customers in registering, assessing, and licensing motor vehicles.
  • Process incoming mail including verifying payment amounts, documenting/typing registration renewals, generating repossession, duplicate, and salvage titles, and record liens notation(s).
  • Provide general and specific motor vehicle information concerning motor vehicle processing in the state of Nebraska and applicable tax rates.
  • Assess new and used motor vehicles including cars, trucks, trailers, boats, motorcycles, snowmobiles, recreational vehicles, and mobile homes based on type, vehicle age, cost, tonnage, and taxing district.
  • Confirm proper insurance, calculate new vehicle sales tax and wheel tax, determine and collect registration fees and identify, obtain, and issue appropriate license plates and/or stickers.
  • Ensure proper forms, signatures, and inspection provided in obtaining new, duplicate, repossessed, salvage and lien-hold titles.
  • Compute and issue customer refunds.
  • Document out-of-state titles and returned mail in the computer system.
  • Accurately maintain assigned cash drawer, printing cash drawer report, and completing daily balance sheet.
  • Provide responsive, courteous, and efficient service to the County residents and the general public.
  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of vehicle types, models, and assessment methodologies.
  • Ability to make operational decisions in accordance with departmental policies, state DMV regulations, and state statutes.
  • Ability to adapt to new situations and requests quickly.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Previous office experience.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one (1) year experience preferred.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to keep up with changes in motor vehicle laws & regulations.
  • Computer Knowledge.
  • Ability to keep and balance a drawer.

Physical Requirements

This position must be able to stand for long periods of time, operate a computer, office equipment, and may occasionally lift up to 20lbs.

Working Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to indoor conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
