Laboratory Services Specialist Job Summary:
Greets and interviews patients, relatives or patient representatives to gather and record demographic information for various laboratory records and provision of care. Informs patients of hospital policies. Functions as communication center of Laboratory Services, answers, screens and routes all telephone calls. Interprets and replicates written physician requests into the lab system quickly and accurately with minimum of supervision.
Laboratory Services Specialist Essential Responsibilities:
- Greets and interviews patients to obtain required information to complete the registration check before placing orders in the Laboratory information system. Knows over 1,300 alpha codes in the LIS for order entry of the physician’s order.
- Knows where to locate standing orders, faxed orders, previously ordered (i.e., Oncology) and pre-employment orders from Employee Health.
- Answers all incoming calls and transfers to appropriate person/Lab department in a timely courteous manner.
- Is aware of locations of off-site service centers and courier runs so that patients can access Lab services efficiently and cost-effectively.
- Distributes Lab reports to the physician mailboxes, US mail or courier.
Laboratory Services Specialist Qualifications:
- High school graduate or equivalent required to include demonstrated ability to read, write, and comprehend medical terminology.
- Experience with computer entry, customer service and medical office preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and proof of current liability insurance as well as reliable vehicle required
