Day Kimball Health is hiring for a Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant for Lab Department as a 2 nd Shift 24-hour job in Putnam, CT (Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant will have to work at our other work sites) Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant Benefits Summary:
Works directly with 2nd and 3rd shift clinical workers as ancillary technical employee obtaining blood specimens, planting microbiology specimens, running dispatch area, inputs reference laboratory results into LIS, puts specimens on instruments and performs some testing waived by CLIA. Obtains blood specimens from all ages of patients using both venipuncture and micro-techniques. Instructs patients on collecting chain of custody urine samples. Has total understanding of patient safety and laboratory techniques necessary to guarantee complete patient safety and anonymity. Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant Job Responsibilities:
- Obtains blood specimens from variety of patient types either in, out, home-bound or nursing home patients using either micro or venipuncture techniques. Identifies patient correctly using latest procedures/policies. Use active voice and start with a verb or adverb “Responsible for” “Monitors” etc.
- Plates specimens for microbiology, including blood cultures following proper procedures.
- Removes specimens from pneumatic tubes, centrifuges blood, collects into system, places bloods and urines on instruments for analysis.
- Provides instruction to patients when setting up tolerance testing or collecting appropriate urine specimens.
- Files lab reference Lab reports in dispatch. Prepares work lists for morning and CLRs as needed.
- Performs waived testing, FLU A, urine pregnancy, and others as outlined by CLIA regulations.
- High school diploma is a minimum requirement to complete the testing.
- Graduation and certification from approved phlebotomy program or recognized certifying agency is preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and proof of current liability insurance as well as reliable vehicle required.
- Prior lab experience either hospital or physician office preferred.
- Skilled with techniques of venipuncture and micro-puncture technique.
- Knowledge of Infection control and OSHA requirements to protect self.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems, including but not limited to, order entry, inquiry and specimen tracking.
- Excellent communication skills including telephone, written correspondence and speaking.
- Knowledge of OSHA and those regulations relating to the use of biohazards.
- Reliable vehicle and ability to travel off site to perform phlebotomy.
- Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology.
- Knowledge of waived testing and basic lab science, including QC requirements.
- Able to run centrifuges and follow brief instructions for placing bloods on instruments.
