What are the responsibilities and job description for the PATRON SERVICES ASSISTANT MANAGER position at Dayton Metro Library?
The Dayton Metro Library is seeking a full-time Patron Services Assistant Manager at the Main Library in downtown Dayton, Ohio. This is a new position that reports to the Patron Services Manager. The successful candidate will oversee the work of the Library Aides (shelvers) as well as their training. They will also provide constructive performance feedback to them as needed. The Patron Services Department administers several system-wide services such as the Ask Me Line (call center) and interlibrary loan, so every day is different. Essential Job Duties
- Assists the Patron Services Manager in establishing and implementing goals and objectives for Patron Services at the Main Library (which includes Stack Maintenance for the Main Library and the Operations Center), system-wide resource sharing (Interlibrary Loan services including SearchOhio), and the system-wide Ask Me Line that support the Library’s mission.
- Assists the Patron Services Manager in directing all department services such as lending, requesting, returning, retrieving, and shelving library materials. Ensures that customer service is a top priority for all Patron Services staff members.
- Assists the Patron Services Manager in directly hiring, training, supervising, scheduling, coaching, and evaluating employees in Patron Services. Ensures proper staffing at assigned customer service points. Oversees department volunteers. Serves as liaison between Patron Services Manager and staff.
- Assists the Patron Services Manager in ensuring the efficient, effective, customer service-oriented delivery of services to Library patrons. Maintains a current knowledge of Library operations, policies, and procedures. Demonstrates and models excellent internal and external customer service. A minimum of 10-20% of work time is spent at a public service point.
- Assists the Patron Services Manager in managing the system-wide Ask Me Line.
- Assists the Patron Services Manager in directing system-wide resource-sharing (Interlibrary Loan) services.
- Assists the Patron Services Manager in overseeing shelving, shelf-reading, and materials shifting activities at the Main Library. Reviews stacks for needed weeding. Receives donated materials according to guidelines.
- Answers patrons’ reference questions and assists patrons in selecting and locating materials. Assists patrons in the use of computers, personal electronic devices, and library virtual materials.
- Assists the Patron Services Manager in monitoring facility needs and initiates maintenance and repair of public areas and equipment in cooperation with the Facilities Director.
- Assists the Patron Services Manager in maintaining a safe and secure facility for staff and patrons in conjunction with the Safety and Protective Services Director.
- Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in library experience. Supervisory experience preferred.
- Ability to maintain effective relationships with community officials, leaders, organizations, the public, Library managers, and staff.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret statistical data, general business periodicals, professional journals, policy and procedure manuals, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence clearly and informatively.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff, patrons, and members of the community individually and in a group setting.
- Ability to deal effectively with confrontational individuals and/or challenging situations.
- Ability to plan, schedule and oversee division operations and personnel.
- Knowledge of policies and procedures related to Patron Services and Resource Sharing Activities.
- Schedule includes day time, evening, and Saturday hours.
Compensation and Benefits: Salary is negotiable starting at $47,395 annually. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance along with paid time off and OPERS retirement.
