As a key member of the Superintendent’s instructional leadership team, the Executive Director of Secondary Schools collaborates with the Chief of Curriculum and Instruction as well as other district administrators and directors in implementing the district’s strategic plan and school improvement initiatives, as well as the professional development of principals, assistant principals, and professional staff.

The Executive Director provides leadership that enables them to move secondary education improvement efforts forward toward the accomplishment of board and district goals.

QUALIFICATIONS
Verifications
- Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S.
- Must pass Federal and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation background check in accordance with Ohio Administrative Code Section 3301-83-06
- Current and valid administrator license issued by the Ohio Department of Education
- Current and valid OPES credentials
Knowledge & Experience
- Master’s degree or higher from an accredited institution
- Five (5) years of experience as a principal or building administrator required, and three (3) years in a district-wide administrative position preferred.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a classroom teacher in a secondary setting, preferred
- Experience working in an urban school district or working with urban education
- Ability to plan, organize, and direct a comprehensive secondary education program aimed at preparing every student for success.
- Ability to lead improvement efforts toward identified instructional targets.
- Ability to motivate, coach and mentor administrators.
- Ability to facilitate systemic change strategies, with an emphasis on progressive educational practices.
- Commitment to equity in educational opportunities for students and leaders, traditionally underserved and underrepresented.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents/guardians, administrators, educators and the community leaders.
- Strong knowledge of best practices in curriculum and instruction, program evaluation, leadership development, school improvement, budget management, and data analysis.
- Demonstrated knowledge of state/federal regulations and accreditation requirements governing public education programs.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Focus the work of secondary schools to ensure that all students meet key benchmarks including credits, grades, key proficiencies and graduation benchmarks.
- Become familiar with the DPS district’s strategic plan, initiatives and engage in the implementation.
- Monitor student learning and coach principals accordingly.
- Ensure that principals are monitoring instructional practices as dictated by the District.
- Personally mentor principals and assistant principals.
- Facilitate professional development for building administrators in cooperation with the Chief of Curriculum and Instruction.
- Promote the systemic implementation of progressive educational practices in use in the District.
- Plan and implement strategic-based initiatives for the District.
- Evaluated principals based on Ohio Principal Evaluation System (OPES).
- Involve principals in goal setting and evaluation of secondary programs, using on-site visits and multi-point data as the basis for decisions aimed at raising student achievement.
- Work in tandem with the curriculum and instruction department to ensure fidelity of implementation of the secondary schools’ curriculum to drive district wide instructional improvements in a coherent manner that supports district goals.
- Facilitate activities centered around community partnerships and outreach.
- Ensure principals follow district policies, processes and procedures and meet deadlines.
- Collaborate with the Chief of Curriculum and Instruction to provide vision, direction, management and oversight of all aspects in instruction.
- Serve as a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet and leadership team.
- Monitor building key performance indicators: attendance, discipline, academic achievements, student schedule, report cards, staff and budget.
