Short-Term Journeyman

SUMMARY
Under general supervision, maintain the safe operating condition of carpentry related needs in the facilities owned or operated by the district. Duties including, but not limited to: Travel to district facilities and conduct repairs and maintenance according to applicable building codes, state, local, and department requirements; Support the maintenance of District facilities to provide a clean, safe, accommodating, and aesthetically appealing learning environment.

Position will be a short-term 180-day position, working 8 hours per day.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Receive carpentry-related repair requests and coordinate and communicate work with Carpentry
• Foreman related to carpentry related repair requests.
• Prioritize and respond to emergency repairs as required..
• Review blueprints and building codes and specifications to determine work details and procedures.
• Evaluate the condition of plumbing in district facilities on a regular basis to identify needed repairs and preventive maintenance.
• Document maintenance and repairs according to department procedures, as well as research the cost of repair and projects in terms of labor and material.
• Recommend the purchase of supplies and equipment for plumbing maintenance and repairs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements

• Minimum High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S.
• Must maintain a valid Ohio driver’s license

• Must pass State and Federal background checks, per Dayton Public Schools policy

Knowledge & Experience

•  Minimum of 5 years of related work experience in carpentry repair and maintenance
•  Skilled in the use of materials, equipment, tools and methods of the carpentry trade
•  Knowledge of carpentry-related building codes and safety regulations
•  Ability to read and write to complete forms and reports

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES/DEMANDS

•  Sufficient strength, agility, dexterity, reflexes, vision and visual acuity to operate a motor vehicle
•  Perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs
•  Able to climb, lift, balance, walk and stoop while handling materials
•  Ability to lift and maneuver materials up to 50 pounds regularly and in excess of 100 pounds periodically

WORK ENVIRONMENT

•  Work regularly involves standing for sustained periods
•  Regular exposure to fluids and hazards associated with plumbing repairs
