DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
The Healthy Corners Program uses an innovative model to increase small retailer access and capacity for healthy products as a means of supporting food insecurity and food justice issues across Washington, D.C. Healthy Corners delivers fresh and frozen produce to small retailers in D.C. neighborhoods experiencing food apartheid; creating convenient, affordable, healthy food options that decrease the distance between healthy food access points and drive community demand for fresh fruits and vegetables. The Healthy Corners team works collaboratively with 50 small retailers, community organizations, produce distributors and farmers, and coalitions to achieve their ambitious goals.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
DC Central Kitchen’s Healthy Corners initiative actively engages community members in the formulation, implementation and evaluation processes of the Healthy Corners program. The overall goal of Healthy Corners is to expand access to fresh produce in the nation's capital. The Store Navigator team will work to streamline communication between corner store staff/management and the neighboring community, disperse information about programmatic updates and food access benefit programs available such as SNAP Match and WIC, and contribute feedback about the program to the Healthy Corners team. This is a great position for someone who is knowledgeable about local corner stores in DC, enjoys fresh produce, and relishes the opportunity to interact with people in their community. Note: This is a 1099 position for community members from Ward 5.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Develop and maintain relationships with store owners and customers (existing and potential)
· Support corner store managers in creating a comfortable, inclusive, and enjoyable experience for customers on-site
· Provide input and feedback with Healthy Corners team on the variety of produce requested by customers, interpersonal dynamics, community comments and concerns
· Share information about Healthy Corners - communicate program information and updates to corner store customers and community organizations both in stores and in community gathering spaces
· Inform customers about the SNAP Match and WIC programs and recruit qualifying community members to participate
· Attend regular professional development trainings
· Attend weekly calls with the Healthy Corners Director and other DC Central Kitchen team members
· Attend weekly community events
· Participate in conversations/trainings with other organizations’ Navigators
· Participate in the annual evaluations process for Healthy Corners through collecting surveys
· Other responsibilities as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Enthusiastic and knowledgeable about surrounding neighborhood, local produce, and corner store culture
· Strong relationships with fellow community members and organizations in your community
· Strong conflict resolution and interpersonal skills
· An outgoing personality, good listening skills, and an ability to make others feel comfortable and heard
· Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
· Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
· Proficient time management skills
· Residents who live near participating stores preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Must be capable of independent local travel
· Must be able to work weekends and occasional nights
· Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
· Prolonged periods of standing
· May occasionally move Audio/Visual and other office equipment or lightweight items weighing up to 30 pounds for various meeting and event needs; Some functions of this position may require moderate physical activity, including transporting, positioning, installing, or removing office equipment items, such as printers, computers, phones, and so on
· Will occasionally move about inside the office and commercial kitchen space to access supplies, materials, file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
· Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer; constantly positions self to access and maintain computer equipment; and must be able to remain in a stationery position for at least 50% of the time.
· Must be able to work in an environment where exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, fumes, dirt, smoke, loud noise, and a variety of odors is common
