Job Summary
This position is in the Department of Buildings (DOB), Office of the Director. The mission of DOB is to protect the safety of residents, businesses, and visitors and advance the development of the built environment through permitting, inspections, and code enforcement.
Incumbent is responsible for translating and interpreting materials on both conventional and complex issues, coordinating the implementation of language access plans, and providing technical assistance to residents under the Language Access Act of 2004 to ensure that DOB residents are better informed, represented, and served.
Duties And Responsibilities
Manages a wide range of customer inquiries and account related tasks, including accessing customer accounts to monitor progress, responding to questions, updating accounts with pertinent information, explaining processes, and outlining next steps. Additionally, it takes ownership of resolving customer issues, complaints, and inquiries by phone, chat, and email, with customer satisfaction central to every action. Conveys agency policies and procedures to customers in a clear and concise manner to provide responses to question(s). Applies analytical, investigative, and evaluative methods and techniques to conduct research, gather information, resolve problems, and make recommendations. Analytical, investigative, and evaluative methods and techniques apply to conduct research, gather information, resolve, monitor key metrics, and generate actionable insights for optimization. Assist DOB with implementation of the Language Access Act by providing technical support to facilitate covered entities outreach efforts into LEP communities. Collaborates with Office of Human Rights (OHR) to coordinate, develop and monitor agency action plans, such as the Biennial Language Access Plans, (BLAP's) to address language access needs for the limited English proficient (LEP) and non-English proficient (NEP) population in the District.
Qualifications And Education
Education
Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- the appropriate foreign language from an English-speaking college or university, English from a college or university in the other country, or translating or interpreting where English and the foreign language were prerequisites.
OR
Specialized Experience: Experience in translating, interpreting, or other work requiring the use of English and the other language; or a combination of work (that required English and the other language) and training at the Defense Language Institute, Foreign Service Institute, or comparable training. In addition, the specialized experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.
