Job Summary

It is the mission of the Metropolitan Police Department to safeguard the District of Columbia and protect its residents and visitors by providing the highest quality of police service with integrity, compassion, and a commitment to innovation that integrates people, technology and progressive business systems.

This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through an automatic payroll deduction.

This position is identified as Essential, which includes but not limited to call-in and callback.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of Police Officer, you must:

  • Be a United States citizen at the time of application.
  • Be 21 years of age.
  • Possess at least 20/100 vision, correctable to 20/30 in both eyes (contacts are permitted, but must be worn for six (6) months or Lasik-type surgery at least six (6) weeks prior to examination).
  • Possess a valid driver’s license at the time of application.
  • Pass a police officer selection multiple-choice test.
  • Pass a physical ability test.
  • Submit to a polygraph examination.
  • Pass a medical examination, including a drug-screening test (blood, urine, and hair).
  • Be of proportionate height and weight as measured by percentage of body fat.
  • Pass a psychological examination.
  • Possess a high moral character for carrying out law enforcement duties.

Must Have One Of The Following

  • Successfully completed at least 60 semester hours of college credit with coursework in any subject matter. Credits from any accredited college or university will be accepted; or
  • Served in the Armed Forces of the United States, including the Organized Reserves and National Guard, for at least two years on active duty and, if separated from the military, have received an honorable discharge; or
  • Have served at least three years in a full-duty status with a full-service police department in a municipality or a state within the United States, and have resigned or retired in good standing.

Work Environment

The work environment regularly involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions.

A background investigation, to include a criminal, traffic and credit check are required for positions with the Metropolitan Police Department.

$25,000 Hiring Bonus - All new hires will receive $15,000 when they begin their academy training as an initial hiring bonus. Upon successful completion of the academy, all new hires will receive an additional $10,000 at time of academy graduation. An existing two year obligated service agreement is required from time of graduation. Members who resign from the Department prior to the expiration of the service agreement will be required to repay the hiring bonus.

Temporary Housing - $200 a night for two weeks up to $2800 from a hotel in Washington, DC. To qualify, you must live more than 50 miles away from Washington, DC. MPD has made arrangements with local hotels to assist new-hires who need assistance locating accommodations.

Rental Assistance - Rental assistance of $1000 a month for 6 months for a residence in DC up to $6000. If you use the Temporary Housing benefit, that amount is deducted from this total $6000 benefit.
