ABOUT THE ROLE 

The Manager, Special Initiatives position within the Data, Operations, and Finance Department (DOF) serves as a right-hand strategic partner to the Chief Operating Officer (COO). 

This role is critical in advancing the DOF's priorities, which aim to provide excellent customer service both internally and externally. The Manager, Special Initiatives leads and encourages effective collaboration, coordination, and communication across the department and organization as teams work to fulfill DC PCSB’s Strategic Roadmap.  This role requires a highly organized, proactive, and strategic thinker who can manage complex projects and foster cross-functional collaboration 

   

Core Responsibilities 

  • DOF Department Planning and Support of the Chief Operating Officer 

  • Provide project planning support to the COO for departmental projects that align with the strategic direction of the DC Public Charter School Board (DCPCSB) and DOF.  

  • Support the COO in planning, executing, and tracking progress of department OKRs, annual priorities, strategy, and plans across the department 

  • Support the COO setting the strategic vision for the DOF, steering department planning processes, and communicating strategically with internal stakeholders to advance the position of the department 

  • Partner with DOF stakeholders to design, launch, and manage departmental projects to best realize the DCPCSB’s and DOF’s strategic direction 

  • Cross-Team and Cross-Department Communication and Facilitation 

  • Collaborate with and support senior team members, including the COO, Director of School Finance, Manager (OCFO), Manager of Operations, and the Director of Data, to help design, launch, and manage cross-functional initiatives.  

  • Interface frequently with members of the DOF leadership team to track progress and steer the direction of cross-functional initiatives in support of the DOFs strategic implementation 

  • Work closely with the COO to prepare for board, agency, and department meetings, including planning meeting objectives, creation of content, and tracking follow-up 

  • Communicate strategically with internal stakeholders to advance the services provided by the DOF 

  • Work closely with the Chief of Staff and a group of project managers to share best practices and elevate cross-department collaboration opportunities, challenges, and needs. 

  • Build expertise in and serve as a Liberatory Design champion within the department, supporting project teams and the DOF team in designing policies, programming, etc., for equity. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Competencies and Qualifications 

  • Superior project management capabilities and ability to manage multiple projects on tight timelines with complex stakeholders 

  • Proactive and self-motivated 

  • Strong attention to detail  

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, knowing how and when to strategically and appropriately employ different methods for both external and internal stakeholders. 

  • Strong understanding of providing customer service within the DOF and the interfaces between internal and external customers 

  • Strong emotional intelligence skills. 

  • You approach ambiguous situations with curiosity and comfort. You quickly develop a working knowledge of unfamiliar subjects. 

  • You demonstrate sound judgment by reporting and escalating to management as needed. You perform risk management to minimize project risks. 

  • You are an excellent verbal and written communicator. You produce detailed, accurate, and relevant notes from internal and external meetings. You synthesize large amounts of information into digestible chunks, communicating the appropriate level of detail for a given audience and circumstance.   

  • Ability to lead and develop a small team that does not directly report to you.  You influence without direct authority. 

  • Exceptional with Microsoft and Google suites of products 

  • Passion for improving educational opportunities for students in DC. 

  • Demonstrated history of high-quality work in fast-paced environments. 

  • Must demonstrate comfort and willingness to discuss, learn, and implement REDI framework, using it to build relationships, navigate conversations, and support the Mission, Vision, and Values of DC PCSB. 

Compensation and Benefits  
Salary is competitive and commensurate with prior experience in a similar role. DC PCSB offers a comprehensive benefits plan covering 100% of the employee’s insurance premium. In connection with our REDI commitments, and to limit pay inequities within our organization, there is a non-negotiation policy built within our compensation system, so the salary for this role is $93,000 – $105,000.
