ABOUT THE ROLE
The Policy and Legislative Affairs Specialist reports to the Senior Manager of Policy and Legislative Affairs and supports the External Affairs Department of DC PCSB in promoting and defending the policy interests of the DC PCSB as well as public charter schools. The Policy and Legislative Affairs Specialist is responsible for supporting the policy and legislative affairs work and the External Affairs Department with a mix of research, proactive information collection, and relationship building. You act to support the relationship between DC PCSB and various DC government entities such as the DC Council and the Deputy Mayor of Education. You ensure that the Executive Director and/or Board is prepared for any potential policy-related external meeting or presentation. Ideally, candidates should have 2-3 years of relevant experience and be professionally curious and passionate about the
intersection of policy, politics, and education.

Core Responsibilities
Government Relations: Monitor legislative and policy developments at the
DC Council, State Board of Education, within the Executive branch and at the
Federal level
Speechwriting, Messaging, and Storytelling: Assists with writing testimony, Briefing memos, hearing preparation, and oversight materials for the DC Council
Network Building & Strategic Partnerships: Build relationships with key
legislative staff and community groups
Reputation & Issue Management: Monitor and memorialize public
conversations in hearings, community meetings, working groups, and online
Reputation Management: Media monitoring and distribution of written
materials
Advocacy & Policy Influence: Conducts research and drafts policy briefs to
support advocacy efforts.
Strategic Partnerships: Collaborate with members of the External Affairs
Department to support their work streams

Competencies and Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, or education field
● Two to three years of related work experience
● Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
● Knowledge of government relations and/or political experience, ideally in local politics.
● Ability to find and evaluate useful information related to education policies or related topics.
● Strong critical thinking skills.
● Deep passion for equity in urban public education and a belief that an
excellent school is equitable.
● Ability to work on time-sensitive materials in the timeline that it is presented.
● Must express comfort and willingness to discuss, learn, and implement REDI framework, using it to build relationships, navigate conversations, and support the Mission, Vision, and Values of DC PCSB.

Compensation and Benefits
Salary is competitive and commensurate with prior experience in a similar role. DC PCSB offers a comprehensive benefits plan covering 100% of the employee’s insurance premium. In connection with our REDI commitments, and to limit pay inequities within our organization, there is a non-negotiation policy built within our compensation system, so the salary for this role is $70,898- $85,885.
