Role Description:

The Meter Technician I aids Meter Technician II engaged in the performance of various field duties in support of customer services, i.e., field testing, installation, maintenance, and replacement of meters, obtaining reads from vault meters following confined space entry procedures, performing bench test of Authority meters, and recording results in various systems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Performs field tests of meters, records test data, retests meters and record results.
  • Obtains reads from meters in vaults following confined space entry procedures.
  • Assists with installing all-size meters and meter transmission units (MTU) programming MTUs using mobile devices and troubleshooting transmissions to obtain meter readings.
  • Assists with the performance of bench tests of all-size meters, capturing test data in applicable systems. 
  • Participates in field surveys to facilitate meter change-outs and installations.
  • Participates in the termination and restoration of service on accounts for non-payment and non-compliance.
  • Maintains and records inventory of meters, parts and tools and follows DC Water’s procurement and disposal policies in maintaining inventory. 
  • Completes required forms and reconciles issuance and inventory supply at designated intervals.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment on vehicle and follows appropriate reconciliation procedure.
  • Operates Authority vehicles as an essential function of the position.  Maintains vehicles and/or equipment in a clean and orderly manner. 
  • Reports any operating deficiencies to the appropriate Authority personnel.
  • Performs other related duties and projects as assigned at the discretion of the immediate supervisor.

Key Working Relationships: Interacts with co-workers in the department and throughout the Authority, as well as customers and contractors.

Other: The incumbent is subject to being placed on call during hours and schedule identified by the Authority.

 

 

Skills & Qualifications:

Required Skills & Qualifications

Required Experience:
Two (2) years of utility experience. 
Minimum Education Requirements:
High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
Required Skills:
Skill in basic data entry and in using computers and mobile devices. 
Basic mathematical skills.
Ability to read maps.
Required Licenses & Certifications:
Must possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operating License.
Required Languages:
English
Physical Requirements: 
Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. 
Ability to crawl and work in tight, unlit and unfinished spaces. 
Subject to indoor and/or outdoor environmental conditions that include exposure to extreme cold and/hot temperatures.
Subject to noise, vibration, and to hazards from a variety of physical conditions.
Subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation, or to exposure to oils or other cutting fluids.

 

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

Preferred Experience:
Experience in the operation and maintenance of meter test benches, maintaining and issuing inventory items, and testing meters in accordance with AWWA standards.
Preferred Education Requirements:
N/A
Preferred Skills:
Skill in categorizing, organizing, and recognizing all meter parts for various meter types and sizes.
Ability to assist with the testing and installation of meters.
Ability to operate sandblaster and drill press.
