What You’ll Do

Summary/Objective:

Responsible for overseeing and managing the credit union's total rewards programs. This includes the strategy, design, implementation, and management of competitive compensation, benefits, recognition, and merit and incentive compensation-related performance management strategies to attract, retain, and motivate talent at all levels of the organization. This role works closely with senior leadership and the People Experience and Development (PXD) Team to ensure our offerings are aligned with organizational goals, market trends, and regulatory compliance requirements. Director of Total Rewards also drives and strategically aligns the work performed by the compensation, benefits, and payroll functions and teams. Ensures proper hiring, onboarding, goal setting, coaching, feedback, training and development, and cross-training for all staff members.

Compensation Strategy and Design

  • Oversee the processes and procedures related to salary benchmarking, job description evaluation, and the management of salary structures to ensure the credit union remains competitive in the market.
  • Work with compensation manager to strategically develop and manage competitive incentive and variable pay programs, including annual bonuses, performance-based merit awards, and long-term incentives.
  • Plans, executes and communicates the distribution and dissemination of pay, compensation, and benefits information to the organization’s employees.
  • Develop and oversee employee recognition programs that foster engagement, motivation, and retention across the credit union.
  • Oversee the preparation of regular reports on compensation and benefits data, cost analysis, and budget forecasts for senior leadership.

Benefits and Payroll Administration

  • Leads the strategic design, development, and implementation of inclusive and comprehensive employee health and wellness benefit programs such as group health, dental, vision, retirement (401-k), flexible spending accounts, life insurance and AD&D, Worker’s Compensation, COBRA and other voluntary benefits.
  • Works with benefits brokers and vendors to manage best practices as it relates to plan design, renewals, cost analysis, and reporting.
  • Stays informed on industry trends, benefits best-practices, and legal requirements to keep the credit union’s offerings competitive and compliant.
  • Oversees the administration of Leave of Absence administration and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) administration, including benefits such as Short-Term Disability, Long Term Disability, as well as state and federal leave and disability entitlements.
  • Oversees the Payroll Function and facilitate the design and implementation of compensation strategies, structures, and pay practices that align with the credit union’s business objectives and ensure internal equity, external competitiveness, and compliance with regulations.
  • Ensures that pay and benefits plans comply with federal and state regulations.
  • Coordinates and oversees the job responsibilities and activities of the benefits team, the payroll team, and the compensation team, ensuring appropriate staffing coverage for payroll processing, health and wellness and leave benefits on behalf of the team.
  • Monitors and assesses compensation and benefits program effectiveness and recommend adjustments as needed based on analysis and feedback.
  •  Ensures that all compensation and benefits programs comply with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., FLSA, ERISA, ADA, HIPAA).

Leadership and Team Collaboration

  • Creates organizational alignment and synchronicity between compensation, benefits and payroll initiatives, to drive and elevate the organization to provide competitive total rewards that retain and compensate top talent for exceptional results.
  • Collaborates with HR business partners to ensure the effective integration of total rewards strategies with talent management and employee career growth and development initiatives.
  • Works with HR Compliance Specialist to ensure timely and accurate completion of all State and Federal benefit and payroll related filings such as PPACA (all 1094-Cs and 1095-Cs), CMS, CHIPRA, HIRD, Medicare Part D, Annual SAR distribution, as well as coordinating with the payroll and benefits teams for cross training and coverage purposes.
  • Hires, trains, retains, and assesses the performance of the compensation, payroll and benefits staff; provides coaching, ongoing career support and guidance, regular one-on-ones, and ensures all team members are afforded educational and developmental opportunities to stay up to date on the most recent employment laws, and best practices.
  • Leads the Payroll Team to partner with accounting, and PXD Leadership on annual budget items.
  • Oversee the appropriate handling of confidential documentation, storage, and appropriate recordkeeping for all payroll and benefits related records and confidential medical information.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Managers(s).

Supervises Payroll and Benefits staff, and Compensation Manager

What You’ll Need

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • 7 years of deep/progressive experience in compensation, benefits, and total rewards operations and strategy.
  • At least 5 years of supervisory experience
  • Strong knowledge of compensation and benefits programs, market trends, and regulatory requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field preferred or commensurate experience.

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

  • PHR or SHRM-CP Certification a plus
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Certified Benefits Professional (CBP), or similar credentials are highly desirable.
