Aerospace Engineer

De-Ice
Boston, MA Full Time
POSTED ON 4/3/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/1/2025
About De-Ice

According to John Owen, co-founder of JetBlue and investor at De-Ice, “the best way to save money for an airline is to run a reliable, on-time schedule, and current-state de-icing makes this impossible.”

De-Ice is an MIT spin-out that’s developed an electric de-icing solution that will solve this problem. This eliminates the need for the aircraft to hold on the ground for 30-45 minutes or more while workers in bucket trucks spray heated toxic fluids on the aircraft.

If you’re passionate about aviation, engineering, and solving difficult problems join our team to take a big step towards making flying sustainable for everyone.

Responsibilities

De-Ice’s Aerospace Engineers are critical because they work on integrating De-Ice’s novel system onto aircraft.

Based in the Boston area, Aerospace Engineers support the De-Ice product lifecycle across several aerospace platforms.

Duties

The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering background, and experience designing, prototyping, and testing novel and complex systems. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Research and development of novel technology and engineering solutions
  • Design, build, and test of lab-scale, pilot-scale, and real-scale prototypes
  • Creation of detailed engineering product designs, including state-of-the-art airborne systems
  • Support scaling for production, including testing and evaluation of manufacturers’ prototypes, selection and sourcing of components, and ownership of manufacturing documentation such as assembly drawings, 3D models, part drawings, etc.

Select current and future projects in the aerospace engineering team include detailed designs for aircraft integration, thermal and mechanical analysis of electronics packaging, thermal design of critical electronic components, experiment design for aircraft-level testing, development of field repair techniques, recognizing and implementing manufacturability improvements, aircraft-level modeling and simulation, among others.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or equivalent required
  • Hands-on experience with design, fabrication, and testing of hardware required
  • Experience with thermal modeling, computer aided design, and/or mechanical design required
  • Proficiency with Solidworks, CATIA, or other CAD software required
  • Experience with hardware prototyping tools such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, microcontrollers, highly preferred
  • MATLAB experience highly preferred
  • Machine shop and rapid prototyping experience preferred
  • Familiarity with laboratory instruments such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, and DAQs preferred
  • 2 years or more of professional or research experience in mechanical or aerospace engineering preferred, ideally with exposure to aerospace or complex system hardware
  • Energetic, driven, creative, and able to respond to unforeseen challenges and conditions
  • Ability to think critically in an ambiguous environment and take end-to-end ownership of work product
