Job Overview
Use of discretion in enforcing Indiana State Statutes involving matters of criminal activity on Deaconess Property. Actively engages in reporting and notification of safety infractions, the prevention and detection of criminal activity, and prevention of any activity adverse to the health care environment. Also aids in any type of emergencies inside the hospital, or on hospital grounds. Shall respond to calls for assistance by hospital staff, patients, visitors, and local law enforcement agencies. Proactively partners with hospital staff to ensure a safe work environment.
Qualifications for Police Officer
- Requires HS diploma or GED Equivalent.
- Requires working knowledge of computers and various software programs.
- Requires current non-restricted Indiana Driver’s License.
- Requires ability to successfully complete all requirements for a Hospital Police Officer as set by I.C. 16-18-4-4.
- Successful completion of Pre-Basic Training (40 hours).
- After hire, must successfully complete the 8-week Tier II police academy at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy unless applicant has previous academy completion.
- Eligible to obtain a Permit, issued by the State of Indiana to carry a handgun.
- Requires the successful completion of the Firearms Proficiency Test with continuous requalification on a semi-annual basis.
- Must be able to deal effectively with patients and family members in a crisis and to deal with abusive people.
Responsibilities
- Performs periodic tours of all hospital buildings and grounds. Visually checks for safety and fire hazards. Makes written reports each shift on findings and irregularities.
- De-escalate tense, dynamic, and rapidly evolving situations
- Enforces Indiana State Statutes relevant to criminal activity occurring on Deaconess Health System Campuses.
- Notifies Chief of Police or other police supervisor in the event of an emergency or criminal act that results in an arrest.
- Enforces hospital regulations and policies designed to prevent theft and unauthorized access.
- Conducts safety checks and tests as required by State and Federal laws for a hospital.
- Assists in all emergencies inside and outside of Deaconess Facilities in accordance with Indiana Coe 16-18-4.
- Investigates and files reports concerning irregular activities. Promptly reports incidents involving criminal activities.
- Patrols parking areas periodically, leaving warning notices on automobiles in violation of parking regulations. Checks fire and emergency lanes to insure they are clear at all times.
- Supports the Deaconess Health Police Department objectives for creating a safe environment.
- Assists with patient restraint when necessary.
- Directs visitors and answers questions relative to location of services.
- Responds to fire emergency calls, assists police, fire, and emergency management teams
- Provides parking lot assistance to staff and guests.
- Supports hospital departmental policies, procedures and missions statements.
- Attends staff meetings and in-services.
- Successfully completes the required 8-week Tier II law enforcement training and all required mandatory training as directed by Indiana Law Enforcement Academy training board.
