What are the responsibilities and job description for the Trail Guide/Farm Hand position at Dead Broke Farm?
We are a working horse farm that is open to the public. We have an average of 40 horses, and we need help feeding, caring for them, and taking rides out. We offer trail rides, pony rides, and birthday parties seven days a week, year-round. We also offer spring/summer camp, corporate events, and weddings.
Our ideal candidate will have the following skills:
- Must be a proficient rider!
- A friendly attitude towards our animals, coworkers, and customers.
- A passion for taking care of horses.
- Shows up to work on their scheduled days.
A typical day at our busy farm includes but is not limited to feeding, watering, grooming, tacking/untacking, bathing horses, mending fences, clearing rocks and limbs from our trails and pastures, greeting customers, giving riding demonstrations, taking out trail rides, and generally keeping the farm looking nice. Pay is a base pay but there is always room for promotion and the tips can be very lucrative. We charge automatic gratuity on birthdays and for groups of 5 or more riders.
Given the risks and potential liability associated with taking novice riders horseback riding, we require that anyone interested in a paid guide / stable hand position try out for the job by volunteering a half day at our farm. If you'd like to come in for the working interview, you'd be here from 8am - 2pm. It allows us to see how well you ride, how much experience you have with handling and caring for horses, and your interpersonal skills when dealing with the public and novice riders. In return, it allows you to meet our staff and volunteers, see how we operate, and the condition of our horses. If you have the necessary experience, and you feel this our farm is a place where you would enjoy working, we'd offer you a paid position. We have part time and full time positions available. If you're interested, please let us know your relevant work experience when you are available to try out.
If this post interests you but you don't think you have the qualifications needed, please check out our volunteer program! We have hired many volunteers once they became knowledgable, proficient riders.
