On behalf of our client, Smith Provision Co., Inc., located in Erie, Pennsylvania, Decision Associates is seeking applicants for the position of Controller. Smith Provision Co., Inc. produces premium quality wieners, sausages, deli meats, bacon, and award-winning hams. Founded in 1927, Smith Provision Co., Inc. is a 4th generation, family owned and operated USDA inspected meat processing manufacturer which employs 57 full-time individuals.
Working at their facility in Erie, the Controller is responsible for managing the detailed aspects of the financial reporting processes for Smith Provision Co., Inc. These processes include planning and organizing annual financial budgets as well as related forecasts and monthly financial reporting packages. In addition, this role is the primary contact and go-to person for external financial audits. On a daily basis, the Controller provides supervision, direction and support of finance processes (payroll, A/P, billing/cash application) and will work to establish the finance function as an effective supporter of and business advisor to other areas of the business.
This is an in-office role, not hybrid or remote. At this time we are only considering candidates who already reside within reasonable commuting distance from Erie, Pennsylvania.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a cost accounting system to guide product and pricing decisions.
- Provide supervision and direction to daily finance department processes.
- Prepare monthly financial statements, variance analysis, and reconciliations for multiple entities.
- Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process, preparing appropriate reports for management meetings.
- Oversee independent financial audits, reporting, and serve as the primary liaison for external accountants.
- Supervise third party payroll administration, ensuring accuracy and compliance with tax and reporting requirements.
- Partner with department managers to provide financial insights and strategic guidance.
- Administer 401(k) plan by partnering with third-party plan administrator.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required, CPA or MBA preferred.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in financial management acting in a supervisory role, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
- Proven leadership experience as a key member of a senior leadership team.
- Ability to develop and manage a high-performing team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to present findings and recommendations to executive leadership.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong Microsoft Office skills.
- Experience learning proprietary financial management software is a plus.
- Prior audit experience is preferred.
