Responsibilities
- Serves as the Lead Marching Band Director, leading all aspects of the high school marching band program while collaborating with two additional 5-12 band teachers to ensure a cohesive curriculum and student experience.
- Collaboratively supports the Concert Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band, and small ensembles at the high school level with two additional 5-12 band teachers to ensure a cohesive curriculum and student experience.
- Collaboratively provides lessons for vertical 5-12 Instrumental Music program with two additional 5-12 band teachers to ensure a cohesive curriculum and student experience.
- Plans and conducts rehearsals, performances, and competitions, ensuring students develop strong musical skills, ensemble techniques, and performance etiquette.
- Works closely with the other 5-12 instrumental music teachers to align curriculum, support student development, and create a seamless transition between grade levels.
- Supports and collaborates with recruitment and retention efforts, partnering with the 5-12 band team to build and sustain strong participation in instrumental music.
- Selects and arranges challenging and engaging repertoire that promotes student growth and showcases the program’s excellence.
- Organizes and coordinates performances, festivals, competitions, honor bands, and trips, ensuring high student participation and achievement.
- Fosters a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where students develop their musical abilities and leadership skills.
- Manages program logistics, including scheduling, managing inventory, equipment maintenance, and budget planning.
- Communicates effectively with with parents, students, and community stakeholders.
- Engages with community organizations, alumni, and booster groups to promote and support the program.
Requirements
- Valid Iowa Teaching License (or willingness to obtain).
- Endorsement in Music (K-12 or 5-12, or willingness to obtain).
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Passion for music education and student development.
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues, administrators, students, and families to maintain and grow a successful program.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Music Education or related field.
- Previous experience as a Head or Assistant Band Director.
- Experience directing competitive marching bands, jazz ensembles, and concert bands.
- Proficiency in multiple instruments and instrumental pedagogy.
- Commitment to professional development and continued learning.
