What are the responsibilities and job description for the Commodity Manager position at Default Board?
Summary: This position is responsible and accountable for all operations surrounding daily corn procurement and feed product sales at a Green Plains biorefinery. The position will manage and execute marketing strategies for multiple commodities while also managing day-to-day logistics. The position is also required to work with leadership to build and strengthen customer relationships.
Responsibilities
- Work with management to maximize plant profitability by implementing effective risk management strategies and tools with respect to origination, sales and logistics
- Oversee the successful acquisition of daily corn grind as well as the sales of daily co-product production
- Negotiate the purchase and or sale of assigned commodities
- Identify, develop, and manage strong relationships with customers
- Negotiate contracts, pricing and ensure timely delivery and payments.
- Analyze markets, identify market trends, and optimize positions to maximize profitability
- Manage storage to ensure grain and other co-products are protected from damage and spoilage.
- Communicate grain inventory levels to the Director of Corn Procurement and manage transportation if necessary.
- Collaborate with leadership on price movements and trends, USDA reports, and future projections
- Work with leadership to understand the grain grading and weighing functions according to USDA and state specifications
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or formal training in agricultural commodity trading/position management
- Minimum of 5 years of related experience preferred
- Physical agricultural products trading, transportation and arbitrage experience is preferred
- Knowledge of futures and the river delivery system and how it affects the cash markets.
- Knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook and the ability and willingness to learn new software applications
- Excellent organizational skills, communication skills, the ability to multi-task, and most importantly the ability to work well in diverse teams
- Outstanding negotiation, analytical, and business skills
- Detail oriented, strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize workloads
- Independent worker, self-motivated, high sense of urgency
- Maintain positive professional relationships, both internal and external
- Demonstrated business acumen and leadership skills
