Responsibilities
MAJOR DUTIESServes as cast room technician with responsibility for carrying out a variety of specialized procedures in the application of casts, splints, and traction devices to support and/or correct orthopedic conditions resulting from disease, injury, or developmental conditions.1.Independently applies the full range of casts from the routine arm, hip, leg, shoulder and body casts to the most complicated Brace Cast, PTB, Minerva Jackets, Halocast, Riser Jackets, Localizer Casts or other specialized casts. Assists in the application of specialized weight bearing casts for the treatment of femoral shaft fractures. Assists with Halo applications. Applies a variety of highly specialized casts including Turn-Buckle, Riser and ambulatory plaster jackets for patients undergoing treatment for scoliosis. 2. Assists the orthopedic surgeon in the operating room preparing surgery packs and assisting during surgery. Following sterile procedures to prevent contamination and cross-contamination, prepares patients for minor surgery by cleaning and shaving the operative area. Prepares patients for injections or aspirations and assists the surgeons with procedures including insertion of Steinman pins and Kirchner wires. Assists the surgeons by anticipating requirements and providing specialized attachments to standard operating room and fracture tables, positioning patients during surgery, holding or rotating affected extremity, and applying the proper cast, traction device, or other outer dressing upon completion of surgery. 3. Assists with x-rays by positioning patient in accordance with medical officer's instructions and holding members in position. 4. Applies a variety of equipment such as Balkan Frames, Suspension Bucks Traction, Bryant Traction, Russell Traction, and various others designed to fit the specialized needs of the patients. Performs minor maintenance and insures all equipment is readily available when needed.5. Conducts in-services as requested by other staff sections of the hospital. Assists or advises regarding such matters as inpatient scheduling and proper maintenance of clinical records. PERFORMS OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.
