Responsibilities

MAJOR DUTIES

As a licensed pharmacist, independently performs the normal range of professional pharmacy functions involved in the operation and administration of pharmacy services in an outpatient health clinic setting. Furnishes support to professional staff providing primary care in the fields of pediatrics, obstetrics, internal medicine, dermatology, orthopedics, as well as minor surgery.

  • Dispenses pharmaceuticals to outpatients. Receives, reads, and interprets prescriptions for outpatients written by medical generalists. In questionable cases, calls the prescriber's attention to any synergistic, antagonistic, and cumulative effects, as well as eventual overdoses or incompatibilities for reconsideration. Compounds, prepares, or selects and labels prescribed drugs and pharmaceuticals from available stocks to provide the required therapeutic agent. May occasionally be required to compound medications extemporaneously. Reviews and checks for correctness all products prepared by non-licensed or otherwise designated personnel prior to issue. Counsels patients regarding their prescribed medications. Applies full professional knowledge in the performance of this function.
  • Participates in staff meetings and provides advisory service for professional staff regarding pharmacy activities, i.e., furnishes information relating to physical and chemical proprieties and characteristics of substances used in pharmacy, or their compatibility in case of overlapping diseases, as well as to new pharmaceutical products on the market. Suggests alternate medications to avoid incompatibilities, alleviate side effects, overcome potentiating drug combinations and prevent antagonistic reactions.
  • Plans and controls stock replenishment and stock keeping. Participates in the surveillance of stock levels and required stock replenishment under consideration of demand experienced. Stores and safeguards controlled substances according to governing directives. Maintains pertinent records in control of stock movements. Keeps abreast through study of professional literature on new pharmaceuticals available on market. Coordinates with supervisor as to complementation or substitution of current stock recommended. Initiates actions essential to prevent antagonistic reactions.
  • Manages, administers, and oversees pharmacy operations within the health clinic. Establishes procedures for pharmacy services within guidelines set forth by the supervisor. Coordinates functions with professional clinic staff regarding pharmacy operation and administrative standing operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure harmonious and efficient working relationship. Assesses equipment and supply needs in coordination with the officer-in-charge and programs purchases within budgetary constraints. Develops and interprets budgetary and manpower requirements, functions and capabilities for the health clinic pharmacy services. Prepares and maintains miscellaneous records and correspondence.
  • Participates in training programs for nonprofessional staff routed through pharmacy operation to acquaint them with specific characteristics of the activity, or for updating of in-service training of military personnel assigned to the health clinic. Trains and oversees subordinate personnel engaged in pharmacy functions, i.e., pharmacy technician.
  • Assigns work to one Pharmacy Technician based on priorities, difficulty of assignments, and the capabilities of employees. Provide technical oversight. Develop performance plans and rate employees. Interview candidates for subordinate positions; recommend hiring, promotion, or reassignments. Take disciplinary measures, such as warnings and reprimands. Identify developmental and training needs of employees; provide and/or arrange for needed development and training.

Basic Requirements For Pharmacist

Education: A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirement above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0660 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

Licensure: A current, active, valid, and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, a territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Medical Requirement: Must be able to distinguish basic colors.

Experience: One year of professional pharmacy experience which includes preparing pharmaceuticals, providing medication counseling to patients, and providing pharmaceutical education to healthcare professionals.
