Responsibilities Exercises technical and administrative supervision over subordinate workers Plans the use of subordinate workers, equipment, facilities, and materials based on workload projections on a weekly or monthly basis Establishes deadlines, priorities, and work sequences, in accordance with general work schedules, methods, and policies established by higher-level supervisors Determines the number and types of workers needed to accomplish specific projects Assigns work to individual workers by verbal or written instructions Monitors work in progress and inspects completed work to assure work order requirements Sets performance standards for subordinates and makes formal appraisals of their work performance Counsels employees and discusses informal complaints and grievances with workers and union representatives Initiates disciplinary actions as needed Maintains work reports and records Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. Ability to Supervise (SOE) : Assists with planning and organizing work activities for employees. Examples Include : Advises supervisor of problems involving disciplinary actions and counseling on conduct; sets goals and deadlines for accomplishing work; and gives instructions to employees on work procedures and safety Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Education Additional Information PHYSICAL EFFORT : Performs moderate to heavy lifting (up to 60 pounds; if items weigh in excess to 40 pounds requests assistance). Moves material by hand or hand truck. Heavier material is moved by material handling equipment, or with the assistance of co-workers. Some effort may be involved in opening or sealing crates, cartons, drums, and other containers. Work requires standing and / or walking for lengthy periods of time and often requires bending, stooping, pushing, and / or pulling material. WORKING CONDITIONS : Work is performed in a warehouse environment or at outside work areas on a year-round basis. Subject to inclement weather when working in open storage areas or on docks. May be subject to cuts, bruises, abrasions, and scrapes, when moving or handling equipment. Also subject to hazards involved in working in close proximity to moving equipment such as conveyors, tow-line systems, and materials handling equipment. In addition, may also be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, solvents, and to high noise levels in mechanized work areas. When working with hazardous materials, may be subject to exposure form radiation, toxins, explosive hazards, or chemical fumes. SAFETY AND HEALTH REQUIREMENTS : Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work area where assigned, as directed by the -supervisor. Types of protective clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to the following : eye, respiratory, and foot protection, protective clothing (gloves, apron, coveralls, etc.). Employee will be required to wear approved hearing protective devices and an audiometric test will be conducted, as necessary, when working near or around noise hazardous, areas, machinery, or equipment.
