Job Summary:

Under direct supervision of the physician, assists in patient care as delegated by the physician. Perform clerical duties, direct patient care, assist in procedures. Adhere to principles of Service Care and the philosophy and mission of Del Puerto Health Center in all aspects of job performance. Aids and supports the health center management team as needed, in accordance with current policies and procedures, applicable federal, state and local standards, guidelines, and regulations.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Patient Care and Clinical Tasks:

  • Obtain vital signs: blood pressure, height, and weight, and record information appropriately in the EHR system accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate competency in administering vaccines for all ages.
  • Assist with patient procedures as delegated, e.g., specimen collection, simple dressing changes.
  • Perform point of care testing e.g; UA, lead testing, hearing test, vision test, EKG
  • Perform screenings and follow up with patient orders.
  • Assist with patient exams as directed.
  • Identify and communicate significant changes in the patient’s status (potential or actual adverse patient occurrences) to the physician.

 Safety and Protocols

  • Follow safety protocols and initiate appropriate measures to assure/promote the safety and wellbeing of patients, family visitors, and staff.
  • Understanding and constant application of “Universal Precautions.”

 Administrative and Support Duties

  • Stock medical supplies & take inventory of supplies.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of patient environment, utilizing the established room cleaning procedures and appropriate supplies.
  • Handle confidential and protected health information (PHI) with a thorough understanding of the importance of confidentiality and non-disclosure according to the general standards set forth by HIPAA.
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned by the Health Center management team and/or provider.

 Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or comments from patients, family members, regulatory agencies, or members of the community.
  • Excellent communication skills for taking patients’ medical history, understanding provider and management team instructions, for accurately documenting patients’ medical information.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the patient population and co-workers in a professional manner with a high degree of diplomacy and tact.

 Technical Proficiency

  • Proper spelling and use of medical terminology.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and electronic medical/health records.
  • Intermediate to advanced phone skills.

 Workplace and Personal Skills

  • Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a high-stress and fast-moving environment.
  • Working with ethnically diverse populations in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work on an as-needed basis to meet operational needs of the health center.

 Supervisory Responsibilities:  None


EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Graduated of an accredited Medical Assisting Program

 CERTIFICATIONS

  • Active (CPR) certification or able to become CPR certified within 30-days of hire

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 1-year experience as MA
  • Outpatient family practice and/or pediatric clinic – Preferred

 LANGUAGE

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit & stand, use the computer. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop or crouch.

The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and push up to 100 pounds on wheels. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
