The Surgical Technician is responsible for assisting with the implementation of quality perioperative nursing care and cooperates as a team member with other members of the perioperative system as well as those within the medical and administrative systems. Participates as a member of the perioperative nursing staff in planning, policy formation, and decision making as it relates to the operating room.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
- Assists with the safe transportation of patients to an individual Operating Suite.
- Assists with patient positioning in accordance with established standards.
- Assures patient safety / privacy.
- Consistently performs all scrub duties with efficiency and speed.
- Responsible for verifying sterility of all supplies prior to use on the surgical field.
- Responsible for creating and maintaining a sterile field.
- Responsible for all surgical counts according to Center policy in conjunction with the circulating nurse.
- Anticipates surgeon's needs for instrumentation, suture, sponges, and other supplies according to technique, procedure, and other special requirements.
- Assists with the maintenance and care of surgical specimens under the direction of the circulating nurse according to established Center policy.
- Assists in the care / maintenance of all equipment, instruments, and supplies.
- Assists with maintaining and updating physician preference cards.
- Assists with case supply selection for next day's surgical schedule.
- Keeps the circulating nurse informed of case progress.
- Assists with room turnover.
- Evaluates the quality and cost-effectiveness of supplies, equipment and services within the goals of the Center.
- Serves as public relations liaison for the Center with patients, physicians and business representatives in the clinical areas.
- Participates in appropriate meetings and committees.
- Participates and supports research and improvement studies that can make meaningful contributions to the quality and economy of nursing services.
- Participates in Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Program.
- Participates in adverse incident reporting program.
- Performs daily biological testing of each autoclave.
- Maintains accurate logs of each biological test
- Accepts deliveries from outside vendors as needed.
