Position Purpose
The Machinist 1 / C maintains the equipment in the Equipment Department by machining and metallizing parts and by disassembling, inspecting and assembling equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Machines parts from samples or drawings.
- Disassembles repairs and reassembles mechanical systems and equipment.
- Uses electrochemical metallizing technology for repairs.
- Performs preventive maintenance, diagnoses equipment malfunctions and makes appropriate repairs.
- Maintain drawing and sketch file.
- May be assigned other tasks requiring equal or less skill.
- The individual for this position assists in maintaining a safe and secure work environment by participating in required training, recognizing and reporting hazards and suspicious activity, and using all required personal protective equipment.
- Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to all provisions of the DRPA / PATCO’S Substance Abuse Testing and Control Policy including random drug testing and periodic physical testing requirements.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
- Fabricate components from ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals and plastics using milling machine, lathe and surface grinder.
- Fabricate and maintain tools and tools holders
- Use jigs and fixtures necessary to hold work pieces.
- Know systems of tolerances, surface finishes and fits used in assembling machined components by pressing and shrinking.
- Select proper speeds and feeds to achieve specified finishes.
- Use precision measuring instruments and gages to check parts for accuracy.
- Make sketches of components for the purpose of fabricating replacements.
- Perform job duties independently and take responsibility for correct and timely completion of assigned work.
- Derive proper techniques, configurations and adjustment from experience and the use of shop maintenance and rebuild manuals.

Education and / or Experience
Required :
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Certification as a journeyman machinist.
- Four (4) years experience as a maintenance machinist.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit (20%). The employee is required to stand and walk (60%) and lift, climb, bend (20%).
Walk, stoop, crawl, climb stairs, steps and ladders, etc. while carrying weighted objects. The employee must occasionally lift, hold, and position objects up to 140 pounds.
The individual must have normal day and night time vision, corrected or uncorrected, lack of color blindness, and, have normal hearing, corrected or uncorrected.
This position requires the incumbent to be able to withstand heights of over 150 feet. Climb up and down ladders and Transit car(s) with a step height of as much as three (3) feet and lift leg(s) a height of twenty-four (24) inches to clear third rail by stepping over same.
Have the ability to wear a negative pressure respirator. Must be able to perform all position functions. Must be able to physically operate all job related equipment to position functions.
Working Conditions

This position requires the incumbent to work both indoors and outdoors in all types of lighting and weather conditions including but not limited to, heat, sun, rain, electrical storms, snow, ice, fire, smoke and other unspecified hazards.
- Work is performed inside in general lighting, heating and ventilation.
- Cleaning work is performed outside in prevailing climate conditions.
- Work must be performed in rail storage yards, along active railroads right of way, on bridges and in subways.
- Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) operates electrically propelled rail cars.
- Must be constantly aware of the hazards that cause electric shock and electrical flash burns.
- Protective clothing, eye protection, hearing protection, dust masks and respirators are provided to protect against chemical splashing, airborne debris, toxic fumes, and sustained loud or high pitch noises that are encountered in maintenance shops.
