General Description of the Position

Delaware State University's Early Childhood Education Lab School is home to the youngest members of our learning community. From an early start, we ignite and nurture an enduring spirit of curiosity, creativity, community, and confidence. Housed within the Education Department in the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, at the direction of the Department Chair, the Site Coordinator works alongside the Director to coordinate and supervise the Early Childhood Lab School learning program and operations, including actualizing the philosophy of the Lab School, complying with state licensing and other requirements, preparing and implementing policies and procedures, managing school operations, and other related work as required.

The Lab School is scheduled to move into a state-of-the-art facility within the Early Childhood Innovation Center (ECIC), currently under construction and scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2025. This position is accompanied by a posting for the Lab School Director and poises the leadership with a once in a lifetime opportunity to build a school from the ground up, building upon the Lab School's long-standing legacy, while championing for progressive new approaches.

Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Essential Functions

The Site Coordinator will lead in these areas :

Lab School Learning Program

  • Engage daily with staff to maximize collaboration, retention, program quality and growth.
  • Collaborate with the center Director to ensure the curriculum is following state and DSU requirements and being skillfully implemented.
  • Guide staff in the implementation of a developmentally appropriate curriculum.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with DSU students, faculty, and volunteers to ensure smooth programmatic operations.
  • Co-designing the curriculum changes, aligning to the "Learning through a Global Lens" curriculum, and ensuring an aligned teaching approach and staff training.
  • Co-design Designing the learning spaces (furniture, materials, etc.) to match the learning program in the new state of the art facility.
  • Observe teachers in practice and provide ongoing coaching and feedback.
  • Develop and maintain classroom environments and curriculum working in collaboration with ECE staff to create a warm, interactive, intellectually stimulating, physically challenging, and emotionally secure program based on individual children's and families' specific needs, including language and cultural values which reflect and support the ECE instructional program.
  • Facilitate positive intrapersonal relationships with families through positive dialogue, regularly scheduled meetings, and accessibility.
  • Partner with parents from enrollment and throughout their time in the lab school to foster authentic engagement with them to meet the educational needs of children.

Support Lab School Site Coordinator in Daily Operations and Administration

  • Develop / maintain an annual master calendar for center operations, in alignment with the University calendar.
  • Develop and monitor the annual budget for the Lab School, including authorizing the ordering of supplies, food, and instructional and programmatic materials, and ensure monthly communication with the finance offices regarding payments.
  • Adhere to health, safety and licensing regulations and ensure staff are trained in these areas.
  • Maintain administrative and attendance records for Lab School staff and children.
  • File monthly reports of purchased services, transportation, food program, attendance, and enrollment to the appropriate agency.
  • Maintain files on all Lab School children and staff; interview all parents of enrolling students.
  • Make recommendations to the Department Chair regarding the Lab School policies, procedures, staffing, fees, holidays, etc.
  • Perform duties of all ECE Lab School staff as needed in emergencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Supervision of parent-child, teacher programs, ability to motivate and support innovation in early childhood center-based programs.
  • Communicate / effectively interact with all stakeholders and others encountered in the scope of the position including parents, children, staff, representatives of government agencies, community representatives, and visitors to the lab school - in written and oral formats.
  • Provide accurate budgeting reports; maintain confidentiality of records and information regarding children and families in compliance with state licensing and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to and appreciation for, the academic, ethnic, socio-economic, disability, and gender diversity of students and staff.
  • A commitment to progressive education and driving pedagogical and programmatic innovation.
  • Knowledge and ability to lead staff in the implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum.
  • A record of strengthening the academic and social / emotional learning experience for students.
  • Demonstrated competency in organizational skills, managerial, administrative, and fiscal leadership, and use of variety of software programs as needed for efficiency.
  • Reliable attendance and ensuring the successful completion and quality of work according to established guidelines and timelines.
  • Exhibit the highest level of professionalism, customer service, personal integrity, and ethics.
  • Qualification Standards

  • Education : Associate degree including at least 15 college credits of child development / early childhood education and curriculum development and planning and meeting all credentialing requirements for an administrative certificate as per DelaCare. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Successful experience : At least two years of professional teaching experience in an early childhood education facility at more than one age level (toddlers, preschoolers).
  • Experience writing and implementing a developmentally appropriate child early childhood curriculum. Preferred : one year of prior supervisory experience, including classroom leadership responsibility or professional administration experience in an early childhood center.
  • Ability to fully engage in indoor / outdoor work environment with children and parents. Some lifting of children and moderate weight parcels. Able to crouch at a child's level and sit on the floor and get back up. Able to reach a child 20-30 feet away within 30 seconds without danger to the staff person's health.
  • Commitment to obtain a Delaware Director Certificate, First Aid and child / adult CPR certification.
  • Bilingual (English / Spanish) preferred but not required.
