General Description of the Position
Delaware State University (DSU) is seeking applicants for a meat science educator and research laboratory technician in the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Employee in this position will report directly to the lab Primary Investigator (Dr. Kwame Matthews in the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources) while working on extension and research programming to improve workforce development in meat and poultry processing, small ruminant production, and usage of DSU’s mobile meat processing training and lab. This is a 100% grant funded position.
Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The following are the functions essential to performing this job.
- Development of integrative workshops and workshop materials that can be used by farmers, educational institutions, and other partners.
- Finalizing, managing, and working with DSU’s online mobile meat processing lab (MMPL) training course
- Coordinate usage of the MMPL by DSU extension and research personnel, partners, farmers, and other educational institutions
- Assist with small ruminant research in the laboratory and on the farm.
- Assist with experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate students.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
- Extensive knowledge of animal science and/or meat science.
- Interest and/or experience in developing workshops, training, and workshop materials around meat and poultry processing, small ruminant production, and parasitology.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with faculty, students, collaborators, farmers, staff, and representatives of local governmental and non-governmental organizations.
- Ability to safely drive farm vehicles and tow a 40’ trailer.
Qualification Standards
- Employee must have earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, Meat Science, or a related field with demonstrated expertise in small ruminant production, research, slaughter, fabrication, and value-added meat processing.
- Successful experience in small ruminant research/production
- Education on meat science, poultry science, and outreach work with farmers, students, and others
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Valid driver's license.
