Position Details
The mental health resource counselor assists students at Delaware Tech with mental health, substance abuse and/or other psychosocial issues by providing assessments and referrals to community support agencies. This position facilitates learning through advising, teaching, and engaging students.
This position reports to the dean of student affairs or assistant dean of student affairs. The mental health resource counselor is responsible for assisting referred and self-referred students and assessing behavior to determine appropriate community or college resources. The mental health resource counselor also provides general advising as needed, teaches Student Success courses, and coordinates and/or facilitates workshops and seminars. Typical interactions include students, family members, faculty, staff, administrators, and community/state agencies.
An incumbent may perform any combination of the below listed accountabilities:
1. Provides leadership and expertise for the development, implementation, and oversight of services and programs to support students with mental health, substance abuse and/or other psychosocial issues.
2. Evaluates and interprets documentation related to mental health, substance abuse and/or other psychosocial issues as needed.
3. Assists students with developing and using strategies that support effective problem-solving, decision-making, adjustment to college, student development, and academic success.
4. Provides short-term case management to current students who need support services.
5. Provides outreach and support to students who are displaying symptoms of emotional or behavioral issues.
6. Serves as liaison to faculty, staff and administration to support student mental health.
7. Develops and delivers professional development activities to increase understanding of mental health, substance abuse and/or other psychosocial issues.
8. Serves as the campus expert on mental health, substance abuse and/or other psychosocial issues; attends workshops, conferences, and other professional development activities related to the field in order to maintain continuing education credits and knowledge of best practices.
9. Participates as an active member of an academic program’s advisement team.
10. Teaches student success courses for new and returning students.
11. Provides comprehensive advising to students to include initial, proactive, and career advising.
12. Refers students to appropriate community service agencies for assistance with needs beyond the mission and services of the college.
13. Serves as the campus coordinator of the College’s Campus Awareness Response and Evaluation (CARE) Team.
14. Assists with leading, planning, and implementing special events and initiatives related to mental health, substance abuse and/or other psychosocial issues.
15. Leads and/or serves on campus and collegewide committees.
16. Performs other related duties as required.
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

Knowledge of crisis intervention assessment and management, including verbal de-escalation techniques and interviewing skills.
Knowledge of mental health disorders, effective intervention/treatment strategies, and community resources and of the means to access resources.
Applies current student affairs theories and best practices.
Knowledge of presentation software and mechanics to create and deliver effective presentations.
Ability to teach college level student success courses, including integration of active and collaborative learning methods and educational technology.
Knowledge of academic and career advising strategies.
Knowledge of student records systems.
Knowledge of Delaware Division of Professional Regulations and Licensure

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
Four (4) years of relevant mental health assessment/ treatment experience.
License in mental health field, social work, counseling, or psychology.
