The Electrical Engineer is responsible for diagnosing and resolving complex electrical power system issues that plant electricians cannot address. This role involves working closely with electricians and maintenance teams, requiring a strong understanding of power distribution, electrical protection, and industrial equipment operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Troubleshooting and analyzing power distribution systems, including transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, and motor control centers (MCCs), to ensure safe and reliable plant operations.
- Diagnosing and repairing electrical controls, relays, starters, and contactors to maintain uninterrupted power supply and equipment functionality.
- Evaluating and improving power quality, voltage regulation, and system efficiency to optimize plant performance and reduce downtime.
- Collaborating with various departments to assess the feasibility of electrical system upgrades and infrastructure projects.
- Specifying electrical components, including conductors, protective devices, and switchgear, for system enhancements and repairs. Coordinating with vendors for procurement and ensuring timely delivery.
- Addressing and resolving critical power system failures, including load balancing, grounding issues, and harmonic distortion problems.
- Planning, scheduling, and overseeing the installation of new electrical equipment, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory codes.
- Managing and communicating with vendors and service providers for electrical system maintenance and emergency repairs.
- Maintaining ongoing communication with relevant departments regarding electrical project timelines, system repairs, and potential downtime.
- Supporting management objectives while working within a unionized workforce environment.
- Promoting and ensuring adherence to safety and environmental policies, particularly those related to electrical hazards and power system operations.
- Participating in administrative and technical meetings as required.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- Education: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
- Experience: Previous experience working in a manufacturing or industrial setting, preferably with a union workforce.
- Technical Skills: Strong understanding of electrical power distribution, industrial electrical systems, and protective relaying. Knowledge of NFPA 70E, NEC, and IEEE standards is preferred.
- Software Proficiency: Basic writing skills and proficiency in MS Office Suite. Experience with power system modeling software (e.g., ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower) is a plus.
- Availability: Willingness to work off-shifts and weekends as needed, with occasional out-of-state travel.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to stand and walk on a manufacturing plant floor for extended periods.
- Legal Status: Must have the legal right to work in the U.S.
