General Statement of Job 

Under limited supervision, plans and presents innovative, developmentally appropriate opportunities for students to learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to the development of students' academic abilities.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans a program of study that meets the needs, interests and abilities of students.
  • Teaches elementary content in both Spanish and English and integrates the teaching of content areas.
  • Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Plans and prepares lesson plans and related activities for individual students or assigned classes.
  • Collaborates in the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of Spanish language and culture.
  • Understands the core purposes of the dual immersion program and research behind the program’s effectiveness.
  • Conducts instruction effectively and proficiently in Spanish and English
  • Uses context clues, manipulatives, realia, visuals, and student-centered instruction to facilitate comprehension in the target language. 
  • Differentiates both content and language learning to ensure that all students successfully meet program assessments and outcomes. 
  • Assesses student progress in a formative manner in oral and written language development, literacy and numeracy
  • Works cooperatively with students and their parents who are culturally, racially and linguistically diverse.
  • Integrates and balances language and content learning agendas
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of students involved.
  • Grades work completed by students; maintains accurate records of test scores / grades.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Maintains accurate, complete and up-to-date records as required by law, District policy and administrative regulation.
  • Assists the school administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Monitors the activities/behavior of the student body as scheduled to ensure student safety and well-being.
  • Supervises the work of teaching assistants and/or volunteers.
  • Maintains positive relationships with parents; schedules and conducts parent-teacher conferences; facilitates parent education workshops and conducts home visits as necessary.
  • Maintains inventory of classroom supplies and equipment; prepares supply requisitions as needed.
  • Coordinates and/or participates in special programs, projects or events as required; serves as adviser to student organizations, staffs and committees as appropriate.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on various staff committees as required.
  • Participates in staff in-service training and continuing education as required.
  • Makes arrangements for substitute instructors as needed.
  • Operates various types of machinery and equipment including a computer, printer, copier, laminating machine, fax machine, audio-visual equipment, tape player, various curriculum-specific equipment or instruments, etc.

Essential Functions 

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment, including a computer, telephone, audio-visual equipment, vehicle, etc.  Must be able to exert up to five pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for periods of time.  Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of five to ten pounds.

Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

 

Interpersonal Communication:  

Requires proficiency in a second language- preferably Spanish due to the high incidence of Hispanic families in South Carolina. 

Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information.  Includes guiding/teaching co-workers and receiving assignments and/or direction from the supervisor.

 

Language Ability: 

Requires proficiency in a second language- preferably Spanish due to the high incidence of Hispanic families in South Carolina.

Requires the ability to read a variety of curriculum standards, policies and procedures, technical and professional studies, reference books and publications, catalogs, handbooks, etc. Requires the ability to prepare curriculum plans, narrative and statistical reports, correspondence, etc., with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.  Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.

 

Intelligence: 

Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical, schedule or diagrammatic form, and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  Requires the ability to apply influence systems in assisting classroom teachers, to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques, to make independent judgments in absence of supervision, and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.  Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

 

Verbal Aptitude: 

Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions, and to counsel and teach co-workers.  Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with persons of varying educational backgrounds and in a variety of technical and/or professional languages. Requires proficiency in a second language- preferably Spanish due to the high incidence of Hispanic families in South Carolina.

 

Numerical Aptitude:  

Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to utilize mathematical formulas, to determine percentages and decimals, and to determine time.  Must be able to use practical applications of algebra and statistics.

 

Form/Spatial Aptitude

Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.


Motor Coordination:  

Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using automated office equipment and to operate motor vehicles.


Manual Dexterity: 

Requires the ability to handle a variety of items including computer keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.  Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.


Interpersonal Temperament:  

Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.  Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.

 

Physical Communication:  

Requires the ability to talk and hear:  (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing:  perceiving nature of sounds by ear).  Must be able to hear and understand communications through a telephone.

Training And Education 

Requires a Bachelor's degree in early childhood or elementary education, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Experience teaching children utilizing a language immersion model and curriculum is preferred. Requires possession of a S.C. teacher certification. Knowledge of immersion education, second language and literacy acquisition. Requires high levels of bilingual proficiency an bi-literacy. Requires a three year commitment to teach in the dual-language program. Must be able to attend summer professional development and training sessions. Must provide a brief demonstration during the interview process.

Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.  Is able to help ensure departmental compliance with all laws and regulations and control the activities of the department through effective leadership.  Has considerable knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of Florence 1 Schools  and other governmental agencies.  Has the ability to offer guidance and assistance to teachers, co-workers and employees of other departments as required.  Has thorough knowledge of instructional principles, practices and methods.  Has knowledge of human growth and development, psychology of learning and curriculum development.  Is able to work effectively with people from multi-ethnic and diverse cultural backgrounds.  Is able to organize and coordinate the activities of groups toward meeting established goals and objectives.  Has the ability to use independent judgment as needed in performing routine and non-routine tasks.  Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Is able to read and interpret professional and technical reports and related materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.  Knows how to prepare reports, correspondence, curriculum plans, etc. Has a comprehensive knowledge of the terminology and various professional languages used within the department. Knows how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation.  Is able to make sound, educated decisions.  Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.  Knows how to make public presentations. Has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations.  Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Has skills in the use of computers.

Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities.  Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility.  Maintains high quality communication and interaction with all District departments and divisions, co-workers and the public.

Plans and organizes daily work routine.  Establishes priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management methodology.  Avoids duplication of effort.  Estimates expected time of completion of work elements and establishes a personal schedule accordingly.  Attends required meetings, planning sessions and discussions on time.  Implements work activity in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules.  


Safety and Housekeeping:  

Adheres to all safety and housekeeping standards established by the District and various regulatory agencies.  Sees that standards are not violated.  Maintains a clean and orderly workplace.
