JOB SUMMARY:

Position assists, directs and supervises the activities of the tree trimming crews and contractors engaged in vegetation control, reports exceptions and routine performance relative to progress, plans and activities to the Vegetation Management Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or equivalent required. Three (3) or more years of tree trimming experience required. Valid Class A CDL required upon hire. First Aid and CPR certification required upon hire. International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist required upon hire. Must be able to read and interpret maps.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervises in-house and contracted personnel involved in maintenance and construction projects, right-of-way clearing, line clearance, access, system improvements, brush control and all other associated tree trimming activities.
  • Oversees and performs a variety of tree trimming tasks and work. Obtains permission from the responsible parties in charge of properties where tree trimming, tree removals and or right-of-way clearing operations are to be performed. Assists Line Crews during outages and related maintenance and construction work.
  • Assists the Vegetation Management Supervisor in providing the necessary training for DMEA and contracted crews to assure that DMEA is compliant with all OSHA, state, and local government agency's regulations. Assists the Supervisor in coordinating Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and respective City/Town and County Planners for tree permits. Coordinates and supervises timber sales and assure compliance with all Forest Service regulations.
  • Advises and assists with planning, developing and implementing procedures and practices involving vegetation control. Advises and assists the Vegetation Management Supervisor by planning, developing and implementing realistic and effective procedures and practices to meet DMEA's
  • Assembles, inspects, loads and transports necessary materials, supplies and tools. Inspects and services vehicles and equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Be competent in a variety of tree trimming tasks including working out of bucket, climbing with ropes, saddles, and gaffs. Have extensive knowledge of the operation of power and manual operated equipment. Must have basic knowledge of equipment maintenance. Know, understand and apply OSHA and DMEA regulations and safety rules.

Must have clear and concise written and verbal communication skills. Possess organizational and time management, problem solving and decision-making skills. Must enjoy collaborating with employees to develop effective solutions. Have the ability to handle situations with tact and diplomacy. Must have knowledge and understanding of electrical distribution and transmission system operation and hardware. Must maintain and apply a working knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), ANSI A300, ANSI Z133, and OHSA 1910.269(r). Must develop and maintain proficient computer skills with Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, Excel, and Word as well as with specific vendor product programs.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment; to frequently walk, stand, sit, and operate a motor vehicle for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, run, crawl, climb, reach, twist, and grasp. Requires the use of keyboard/computer/handheld electronic devices and to make repetitive hand movement motions in the performance of daily duties. Requires vehicle and foot patrol of utility power lines in remote locations as well as in urban city environments. Requires frequent walking/hiking/standing on various surfaces including dry, wet, slippery, flat, uneven, rough, steep terrain, hills and slopes. Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Requires finger dexterity, good hearing, ability to speak, and the ability to perform close work. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Office equipment used frequently includes personal computers, related software, copy machines, fax machines, etc.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Regular, predictable attendance is required. Approximately 75% of the work is performed outdoors. Exposure to noise, dust, and all types of weather and temperature conditions. Exposure to hazardous traffic conditions. Driving a company vehicle daily is required; travel by commercial means occasionally may be required.

DMEA dispatch positions perform a safety sensitive function; Apprentice Dispatchers are subject to drug and alcohol testing as stated in the DMEA Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy and Procedures Manual and the "All Employee Drug and Alcohol Policy."
