What are the responsibilities and job description for the Powersports Controller position at Delta Powersports?
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the powersports dealership or company, ensuring the accuracy of financial reporting and compliance with financial regulations. The Controller will manage all accounting processes, including financial statement preparation, cash flow management, and cost analysis. In collaboration with the company officers, they will assist with budgeting, forecasting, and data analysis, developing strategies to maximize profitability. This position requires an in-depth understanding of accounting principles in addition to the unique aspects of the powersports industry, including inventory management, parts and service departments, and customer financing.
We are offering a $10,000 relocation bonus for the right applicant.
Financial Management & Reporting:
- Maintain the chart of accounts, normalize it for all stores in the dealership group, and keep up with mapping changes to third-party financial reports.
- Maintain Lightspeed EVO mapping (sales categories, sales types, tax categories, MU sales categories, methods of payment, financial accounts, etc.)
- Prepare and present accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash position statements.
- Support upper management with paperwork submissions for flooring LOC renewals and any acquisitions of brands or additional stores.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal financial regulations.
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close processes, ensuring deadlines are met.
- Manage audits (internal and external) and ensure financial records are properly maintained.
- Implement and maintain financial controls to safeguard company assets.
- Record the acquisition and disposition of assets accurately.
- Work closely with the HR and Payroll departments to ensure that they have properly programmed software to do their jobs well, that they are compliant with all state and federal regulations as well as industry best practices, that all taxes are being filed in a timely manner, and healthcare, retirement funds and other employee benefits are set up correctly and functioning as intended.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Collaborate with department heads on the annual budgeting process. Use reliable forecasting methods to ensure realistic financial goals.
- Monthly, quarterly, and annual forecasts are currently made in collaboration with NCM and Garage Composites dealer support groups. The Controller will participate in group events as requested by the CEO, provide justification for numbers submitted, and participate in budget updates as required.
- Track actual performance against submitted budget, providing variance analysis and identifying key drivers of business performance.
Inventory & Cost Control:
- Oversee powersports inventory management, ensuring accurate costing and proper recording of all transactions related to the sales and parts departments.
- Conduct regular financial analysis of inventory turnover, cost of goods sold (COGS), and margins, recommending improvements as needed.
- Assist service department managers in tracking labor costs, allowing them to control profitability within service operations.
- Oversee the work of all lower-level accounting employees, ensuring they have the proper tools, training, and encouragement to do their job well.
Cash Flow & Treasury Management:
- Manage cash flow, ensuring the company has adequate liquidity to meet short-term obligations and fund growth initiatives.
- Oversee banking relationships, lines of credit, and financing agreements.
- Develop strategies for optimizing working capital, including accounts receivable and payable management.
Leadership & Team Development:
- Lead the accounting and finance team, providing guidance, mentoring, and professional development opportunities to staff under multiple rooftops.
- Foster a collaborative work environment, ensuring seamless communication between finance and other departments.
- Keep current with ongoing changes to accounting and payroll software, training staff as needed to ensure proper usage and accurate reporting capabilities.
Compliance & Risk Management:
- Ensure compliance with state and federal laws affecting dealerships, including sales tax, income tax, ACA, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Manage risk by implementing financial controls, ensuring segregation of duties, and maintaining appropriate insurance coverage.
- Stay up-to-date on powersports industry trends, accounting regulations, and financial best practices, applying changes to the company’s financial strategies where necessary.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience:
- 5 years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- 5 years of experience in the powersports or automotive industry
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Lightspeed Evolution (Required).
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- Advanced Excel skills, including financial modeling and data analysis.
- Leadership Abilities:
- Proven experience in managing and developing accounting or finance teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments.
