ABOUT THE ROLE :
A Legislative Director may serve as the lead staff person helping state legislators develop policy on state-federal matters, including workforce and economic development. This position requires substantial knowledge in state-federal policy, independence, initiative, and political sensitivity. The position reports to the vice president of state-federal relations.
WHAT YOU’LL DO :
- Identifies, monitors, analyzes, and interprets congressional and federal agency actions affecting state governments.
- Writes clear, accurate informational and lobbying documents for various audiences.
- Provides information and assistance to state legislators and legislative staff.
- Develops, plans, and coordinates relevant programs for the committee.
- Maintains a network of contacts in the states and among federal agencies.
- Works effectively in coalitions to promote NCSL positions.
- Develops lobbying strategies and represents state legislative concerns.
- Coordinates work with other NCSL staff.
- Plays a leadership role on internal task forces.
- Performs other responsibilities as needed.
