What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substitute Long Term Paraeducator IA/Special Education Assistant position at Dennis Yarmouth Regional School District?
HOURS: Monday through Friday, 6.5 hours per day plus a half hour unpaid lunch
COMPENSATION: Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School Committee and the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional Secretaries and Assistants Association located on the DY website.

All paraprofessionals must meet certification requirements as determined by the Every Student Succeeds Act. Individuals with an Associate’s degree or higher, or who have obtained 48 credit hours from an accredited higher education institution, have met this requirement and will need to provide a copy of a transcript showing your highest degree earned. The final pathway to meet this requirement is passing the Massachusetts ParaPro or Workkeys Assessment certification within the first year of employment. SUMMARY: Supports students, which may include, but not limited to, students with: low-incidence disabilities, autism, social-emotional needs, and behavioral concerns. Support may occur in an early education setting, inclusion setting, substantially separate classroom or home. This may be 1:1 or in a small group.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Provides direct instructional support to students with disabilities in the classroom or in a separate setting.
- Implements and/or adapts modifications and accommodations to the environment or curricular materials as directed by the special education teacher/liaison, classroom teacher or related services provider.
- Collects data regarding students’ goals and/or objectives as directed by licensed staff.
- Supports the behavioral/social-emotional needs of children by utilizing pro-active, pro-social problem solving skills.
- Support special education students by providing assistance with equipment (i.e. assistive technology).
- Assist with the supervision of students during play and lunch periods.
- Foster student independence while supporting individual needs.
- Responsible for carrying out tasks that allow students to meet their IEP goals and appropriately function in the educational setting. Tasks may include assisting with behavior, medical, social, academic or self-help interventions.
- Work may include, but is not limited to assisting with personal hygiene, direct behavior services (such as ABA) and data collection.
- Assist in the lifting and/or toileting of student into medical equipment, such as standers or other adaptive equipment as needed or as required in IEP.
- Maintain proper confidentiality of student records.
- Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance.
- Supporting the toileting and daily living skills of students can be an essential function of the job.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- CPR, First Aid Certification desirable.
- Participate in annual trainings, for blood borne pathogens, universal precautions, 51A, bullying, epi-pen, etc.
- Must be highly qualified.
- Associate’s degree, 2 years of college or passing score on the ParaPro test.
- Knowledge of child development (intellectual, social/emotional, and physical) and 12 months experience working with students with special needs is desirable.
