What are the responsibilities and job description for the Independent Contract Driver position at Dent County Health Center?
Overview
We are seeking a reliable and dedicated Contract Drivers to join our team at the Dent County Health Center (DCHC). Our innovative transportation service, funded by the Dent County opioid settlement fund, is designed to improve community health by providing safe, compassionate rides to Salem and Dent County residents. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in supporting individuals—including those in recovery—by ensuring punctual and respectful transportation to medical appointments, recovery support services, and other essential destinations. This position not only requires excellent driving skills but also a commitment to the values of sensitivity, confidentiality, and community care.
Compensation
Contract drivers will be paid on a per trip basis. Contract drivers will receive 90% of the price of the ride.
- Rides within Salem – Flat Fee of $5 for 1 way trip. ($4.50 to driver)
- Within Dent County – Base fee of $2.00, then $0.95/mi (min $5) for 1 way trip. (Minimum $4.50 to driver).
Drivers are still paid based on full price for rides which have compensated rates.
Duties
- Safe Transportation: Operate the contractor owned vehicle to transport residents across the county, ensuring adherence to all safety and commercial driving regulations.
- Compassionate Service: Provide excellent customer service by interacting positively and respectfully with clients, including individuals in recovery or with special health needs.
- Assistance & Safety: Help passengers with heavy lifting, mobility, or handling luggage while following all safety protocols.
- Technology Use: Utilize ride tracking software to manage ride requests and maintain accurate logs of all trips in compliance with DCHC and opioid settlement fund guidelines.
- Vehicle Maintenance: Maintain a tobacco, marijuana, and drug free, clean, safe, and reliable vehicle while transporting passengers.
- Training & Compliance: Participate in mandatory training sessions on customer service, safety procedures, and adhere to confidentiality and sensitivity protocols when interacting with vulnerable populations.
- Community Representation: Act as an ambassador for DCHC by upholding the organization’s mission and values during every interaction with the community.
Experience and Qualifications
- Must be able to comply with DCHC tobacco-free policy while on duty.
- Previous experience as a van or taxi driver is preferred, with additional experience working with medically vulnerable populations considered an asset.
- A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
- A vehicle inspection will be required.
- Must maintain vehicle insurance and provide proof of insurance at all times.
- Strong customer service and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively and compassionately with diverse clients.
- Familiarity with local routes and proficiency in using GPS/navigation tools.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background screening and drug screening.
- Additional certifications in first aid, defensive driving, or similar areas are a plus.
