Primary Purpose:
The Student Assistance Counselor will be responsible for implementing mental health and substance abuse programming on their assigned campus.
Qualifications:
Education and Certification
- Master’s degree
- LPC, LPC-Associate, LMSW/LCSW, LMFT, LMFT-Associate or Professional School Counselor Certification.
Experience
- Three (3) years related substance abuse and/or mental health counseling experience preferred
- Crisis and case management experience
Special Knowledge and Skills
- Demonstrates ability to build effective relationships with staff, students, and family members
- Capacity to effectively present awareness programs to students, parents, and staff
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Willingness to execute written employment contract with the Denton ISD
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Participates in Response to Intervention process or other referral strategy for the early identification and early intervention of students who are involved with substance abuse, violent behavior, and/or emotional crisis.
- Provides individual and group support services for students involved, or who are at risk to be involved, with substance abuse, violent behavior, or who are in emotional crisis.
- Provides crisis intervention counseling, leadership, and coordination in the event of a campus affected crisis or crisis within the DISD.
- Provides classroom instruction for student and staff awareness related to current state mandates.
- Conducts annual surveys and provides annual activity summary to the Department of Counseling Services
- Facilitates parent education and awareness related to current state mandates.
- Consults with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant individuals to enhance their work with students in crisis and with drug, violence, and other emotional concerns.
- Participates in transitional meetings and counseling with students assigned to the DAEP.
- Serves as suicide liaison for the campus.
- Assesses student/family need for community resources and provides appropriate information.
- Provides staff awareness programs throughout the year on critical areas.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follows district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Participates in professional development, department meetings, and special events as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Environment: Work inside, may work outside; frequent district-wide and occasional statewide travel
