Job Overview:
Denver Academy of Torah is seeking a dynamic, passionate, and experienced English teacher to join our Upper School (Grades 6-12). The ideal candidate will have a strong background in teaching literature, writing, and language arts, and will be able to engage students in critical thinking, literary analysis, and effective communication. Responsibilities:
Instructional Design & Teaching:
- Teach English language arts courses for grades 6 through 12, focusing on a range of topics such as literature, writing (creative and analytical), grammar, and vocabulary.
- Develop engaging and effective lesson plans that align with the school’s curriculum and academic standards.
- Foster a classroom environment that encourages inquiry, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students with varying abilities.
- Integrate technology and multimedia resources into lessons where appropriate.
Assessment & Feedback:
- Design and administer assessments (essays, exams, projects) to evaluate students’ progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Regularly track student performance and communicate progress with students and parents.
Curriculum Development:
- Collaborate with fellow teachers and leadership to develop and refine the English department curriculum.
- Contribute to the integration of interdisciplinary projects and themes.
- Incorporate diverse perspectives in course materials, including global literature and contemporary voices.
Classroom Management:
- Establish and maintain a respectful, inclusive, and productive classroom environment.
- Address disciplinary concerns in a fair and consistent manner, promoting positive behavior and student responsibility.
Advisory and Co-curricular Support:
- Serve on committees
- Participate in school functions or events such as back to school night, etc.
- Participate in school support services, such as recess, welcoming students, end of day procedures, etc.
- Participate in school-wide extracurricular activities such as clubs, student government, or other committees.
Professional Development:
- Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in teaching and learning.
- Attend department meetings, faculty meetings, and school events as required.
Communication:
- Communicate effectively with parents, colleagues, and school administration regarding student progress, challenges, and achievements.
- Maintain timely and organized records of student grades, assignments, and assessments.
Qualifications:
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or a related field is required.
- Experience: At least 3 years of experience teaching English in a middle school and/or high school setting
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Master’s degree in English, Education or a related field
- Experience teaching advanced English courses (AP, Honors, IB) or extracurricular writing programs.
- Knowledge of contemporary educational philosophies and best practices in literacy instruction.
- Experience working with diverse student populations and a commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment.
- Outstanding organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, professional demeanor, a strong work ethic, and humble confidence;
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of English (language arts), including literature, writing, grammar, and rhetoric.
- Experience with differentiated instruction and various teaching methods.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to inspire and engage students, and create an inclusive and respectful classroom culture.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Familiarity with educational technology and tools (Google Classroom, Learning Management Systems, etc.).
