Position Title: Payroll Accountant
Reports to: Finance Director
Job Classification: Full-time; Exempt
Salary Range: $55,000 - $72,000 annually

The Opportunity:
The Payroll Accountant will be responsible for finance/accounting functions including processing and auditing biweekly payroll, reconciling payroll tax returns, creating data import files and writing reports. This position will provide assistance to employees’ questions regarding pay and withholdings. The accounting responsibilities may include but are not limited to benefits reconciliation, accounting journal entries, payroll journal entries, grant payroll entries, grant payroll tracking, contract tracking, gift-in-kind review and month-end accounting close review.
Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
PAYROLL:
- Administer and perform the data entry necessary for the accurate and timely processing of hours and earnings of all employees resulting in biweekly and semi-monthly payroll checks with overtime as needed.
- Assist the Finance Director in identifying payroll operations process improvements, perform procedural documentation updates as needed.
- Audit payroll records and make approved adjustments.
- Audit Quarterly Statements of Deposit providing corrections when needed.
- Audit, research and resolve cases assigned for payroll calculation/deduction-related issues in a timely manner.
- Process manual checks, involuntary terminations, missed hours, and special requests.
- Ensure systems process correctly compute and record time, earnings, employee benefits, special deductions, mandated benefits, taxes, garnishments and other items that affect net pay and/or company liability.
- Generate management reports using Paylocity Custom Reports.
- Calculate annual incentive and raise, including 401(k) tenure incentive contribution by using excel “what if’ model.
- Generate payroll and total compensation reports.
- Responsible for balancing payroll, producing federal, state and local tax payments, and answering employee questions and research.
- Responsible for voiding checks, stop payments, and direct deposit reversals.
- Validate and administer vacation and sick time balances, calculate carryovers and year-end accrual.
- W-2 and 1095-C preparation and amendments as needed.
- Provide Benefits Administration Assistance by reconciling the 401(k), 457(b), FSA and HSA payroll deductions arranging to send report and funds to vendors each payday.
- Responsible for the annual worker’s compensation audit.
- Prepare census data for ERISA 5500 filing and annual 401(k) audit.
- Prepare a year-end Payroll calendar.
- Prepare the payroll budget for annual planning sessions.
- Review annual MHA applications and adjust Paylocity setting accordingly.
ACCOUNTING and ADMINISTRATION:
- Perform certain day-to-day accounting functions as assigned to assist the Finance Director and the department.
- Ability and knowledge of GAAP accounting.
- Write-up and input journal entries, payroll journal entries into general ledger as needed.
- Perform contract and grant payroll tracking.
- Perform gift-in-kind review as needed.
- Perform month-end accounting close tasks and review, assigned.
Requirements
Minimal Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field and 3 years of in-house payroll processing and administration experience or a combination of related education and experience.
- Solid understanding of US GAAP.
- Paylocity experience preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of the payroll cycle, best practices, and federal, state, and local regulations.
- Ability to coordinate and complete work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Demonstrated ability to handle highly confidential information with professionalism.
- Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and consistently meet strict deadlines. May require overtime, as needed.
- Demonstrated attention to detail, organizational skills, accuracy, and excellent follow-up.
- Effective in problem solving, with the ability to resolve complex issues.
- Must be proficient in MS Excel, Word, Outlook and accounting software.
- Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities with minimal supervision.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify trends and errors.
- Strong interpersonal skills to include verbal and written communication skills.
- Active Driver’s License as a limited amount of work-related travel to various Denver Rescue Mission (DRM) sites may be required. Must be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Record check.
- Ability to affirm the Statement of Faith.
