Job Title : Rail Engineer

Industry : Commuter Rail Operations & Maintenance

Reports to : Chief Engineer

Position Summary :

Position is responsible for railroad systems and infrastructure-related engineering projects. Oversees and reviews the work of staff and contracted personnel conducting design, repair, maintenance and replacement of track, drainage systems, bridges & culverts, highway-rail and pedestrian-rail grade crossings, signal control points / interlockings, overhead contact systems and substations, stations, maintenance facilities, and park and rides. Position may also be responsible for providing and / or facilitating design, calculations, and various engineering services.

Description of Duties :

  • Manage scope, budget, and schedule, as well as development of design criteria, specifications, project guides, project meeting notes, and cost estimating activities for multidisciplinary engineering projects.
  • Provides technical reports, engineering plans, and specifications through data collection / analysis / interpretation, field study, and problem solving to drive system safety, availability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Act as the main technical adviser for subcontractors and craft personnel.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide seamless project execution.
  • Assist DTO Procurement and Administration staff with preparation of Engineering Contracts through scope of work development.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Engineering Department maintenance standards and asset renewal criteria as necessary.
  • Interface with contractors for the preparation of engineering drawings, plans, and specifications.
  • Independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, processes, and criteria using sound judgment in making adaptations and modifications to Engineering Department-issued drawings, plans and specifications.
  • Assist with the implementation of processes and tools, providing system reports, maintaining and updating electronic information systems.
  • Use computer design software and field equipment to prepare engineering documents.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, and procedures for the Engineering Department.
  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings, staying on top of new trends and innovations in the field of railroad design, maintenance, inspection and repair.
  • Other duties as assigned or required to meet business needs.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from a four-year college or university.
  • Minimum 4 years related experience.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT), or Professional Engineer (PE) license, preferred.
  • Working knowledge of rail systems (Track, Signals, Power / OCS, Structures).
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite of applications; AutoCAD Design software; Asset management and maintenance management systems.
  • Ability to prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Understand applicable regulatory requirements pertaining to rail systems.
  • Must be available to travel and work in the field on occasion.
  • Must hold, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver's license.
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. and successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screen and be willing to comply with the DTO Drug and Alcohol Policy.
  • Working Conditions :

  • Though infrequent, the incumbent might be required to work nights and / or weekends
  • Environmental Conditions : office, field, and construction site environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions
  • Physical Conditions : May be required to walk, stand, or sit for prolonged periods of time
