Join us in keeping Oregon beautiful! As a Grounds Maintenance Worker 1, you'll maintain the landscapes of key state buildings.
The
Department of Administrative Services
(DAS) seeks a dedicated Grounds Maintenance Worker 1 to provide landscape maintenance
for key state properties, primarily around the Capitol Mall in Salem. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who takes pride in maintaining outdoor spaces and supporting state operations.
This role involves maintaining the grounds of multiple state office buildings and ensuring high standards for the appearance, safety, and functionality of these spaces.
Duties include:
- Operate and maintain grounds maintenance equipment (mowers, blowers, tractors, etc.) and perform routine repairs.
- Mow lawns, edge, trim, and apply pesticides/herbicides following safety guidelines.
- Fertilize and maintain plant material, including planting, pruning, and weeding.
- Remove leaves, debris, and maintain turf and landscaped areas.
- Maintain and repair irrigation systems.
- Perform safety inspections, remove litter, and maintain sidewalks/roadways.
- Remove snow and ice using appropriate tools during inclement weather.
- Track supplies and assist with wildlife care, special events, and emergency tasks.

What We Are Looking For
Minimum Qualifications:
An associates degree in landscape technology, horticulture, turf management or closely related field AND six (6) months of landscape experience;
OR
Two (2) years of landscape experience.
Desired Attributes
- Equipment Operation: Ability to safely operate and maintain grounds maintenance equipment, including riding lawnmowers, tractors, dump trucks, weed eaters, blowers, chainsaws, and hedge trimmers.
- Repair and Maintenance: Skills to perform routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment.
- Horticultural Knowledge: Understanding plant care, such as pruning, planting, and applying pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
- Safety Practices: Knowledge of safety procedures and the ability to conduct safety inspections.
- Organization & Time Management: Ability to independently prioritize and organize tasks to meet deadlines while staying adaptable to changing needs.
- Problem Solving: Skill in quickly addressing maintenance issues and finding solutions.
- Teamwork: Ability to work well with others, including collaborating on special projects and events.
- Customer Service: Strong interpersonal skills to interact courteously and professionally with the public, including answering questions, providing directions, and addressing concerns.
Preference may be giving to candidates with any of the following:
- Current ISA Certified Arborist.
- Valid Pesticide License.
- Experience in small engine mechanics and repair.
- Experience in welding and metal fabrication.
