Job Duties
Western State Hospital (WSH) is recruiting for a Public Safety Officer III who will maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and the public at the hospital and The Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents (CCCA). This is accomplished through the provision of support to the clinical staff in the units and treatment milieu management. This position requires availability to be able to work all shifts including weekends and holidays.
The Public Safety Officer will respond and assist unit staff with patients at both WSH and CCCA; conduct walk throughs; check in and scan visitors/patients; transport combative, dangerous, public safety patients to/from other state facilities, court hearings, and appointments; patrol hospital property; respond to the scene of any fire, disaster, duress, etc; and observe and assess situations and take appropriate actions when necessary.

- ability to work with mentally ill patients to include adults and juveniles, as well as the ability to work cooperatively with other Public Safety staff, hospital officials, employees, and local law enforcement officers
- ability to pursue, apprehend, and return escaping patients to the supervision of their unit staff; physically interact with out-of-control patients and return them to control, and manual dexterity, standing, walking, and lifting as routine part of work
- ability to complete SCOP training and obtain certification
