JOB SUMMARY

This position is located in the Case Management Services division of the District of Columbia Department of Corrections (DOC), Central Detention Facility (CDF/DC Jail) and Correctional Treatment Facility (CTF). The DOC facilities serve as points of entry for persons who have been arraigned and committed for incarceration by the Superior Court of the District of Columbia the U.S. District Court, and any detainments under the authority of the U.S. Marshall Service. Case Management Services is responsible for the development of a planned program of institutional activities designed to meet the varied demands, individual needs and abilities of the inmates in DOC custody.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CS-09

Responsible for the management, guidance and evaluation of assigned caseload.

Conducts intake interviews with newly admitted inmates in assigned area to obtain pertinent data, and to orient inmates to the institutional rules, regulations, procedures and program opportunities. Conducts Risk and Needs assessment in order to help inmates to identify goals they want to achieve; and during incarceration, help inmates connect with relevant community service providers.

Secures information from new inmates within 72 hours of admission in order to determine classification of the inmates according to their respective charges. Responsible for reevaluating inmates every 90 days to ensure correct classification is maintained. Notifies inmate of parole or pre-release program denials and explains reasons for denial. Completes research for programs suited for pre-release inmates that are designed to assist with readjustment to life in the community. Refers inmates to stress management, life skills, substance use programming and anger management programs, while still incarcerated.

Responsible for the development of a planned program of institutional activities designed to meet the varied demands, individual needs and abilities of an assigned caseload of inmates. Prepares and when required, presents reports based on observed inmate behavior, conformity to jail policies and procedures, and other evaluative outcomes.

Identifies significant factors or variables in the inmate's history that may have contributed to criminal behavior. Considers and evaluates such factors as educational background, family relationships, socioeconomic factors prior to arrest history, substance abuse, where applicable, physical/mental status, etc. Develops a program designed to meet/challenge the inmate during the period of incarceration, which the goal of rehabilitation in thinking, behavior and outlook. Annually, makes recommendations regarding changes to inmate programs based on the review and reclassification of inmates assigned to caseload.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

Degree: Behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

OR

Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition, this position requires Specialized Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a Detention Facility office setting.

Note: This position will be filled at the grade CS-09 or CS-11 level.

Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday 8:15am to 4:45pm

Pay Plan, Series and Grade: CS-0101-11

Promotion Potential: Grade 9 has Promotion Potential to Grade 11.

Grade 11 has No known Promotion Potential.

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is covered under a collective bargaining agreement.

Position Designation: This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and periodic Criminal Background Checks and Traffic Records Checks (as applicable). This position is also subject to mandatory pre-employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.

This position is designated as Essential

A TB Test is required prior to entry on duty.
