Recruitment Process:
Going through the recruitment process for a public safety position is different than other recruitment processes you may have completed in the past. There are several assessments and screenings required to fill correctional officer positions. This lengthens the time it takes to process applications. Below, see each step that is required in this process:
1. Apply
Apply today to start the hiring process. This application is valid for the 12 facilities throughout Oregon. Select any facilities for which you may be interested. Facilities have different staffing needs. The more facilities you select the better chance you will have to move quickly through the hiring process. If multiple facilities are interested at the same time we will consider your preference. You may decline an offer from a facility without impacting your application status for other facilities you have applied to.
2. Initial screening
After receiving your application there will be an initial review of your minimum qualifications and criminal history information to determine if there is anything that may prevent you from moving forward in the process.
3. Competency Testing
You will be required to complete competency testing. The department uses a third-party company to create and manage this test. The test is called the National Testing Network’s REACT test. This test is available routinely at many Department of Corrections facilities and at other locations across the country. There is a cost associated with the test which can be waived by using a voucher code that will be provided to you upon receipt of your application. To move forward in the process you will need to receive a score of 70 or above on all areas of the NTN REACT Test. The department will receive your scores directly from the National Testing Network.
If you have a bachelors degree or have been previously certified as a Correctional Officer by the Oregon Department of Processional Standards, Safety, and Training you are exempt from this requirement.
4. Background Preparation
The department uses an Electronic Statement of Personal History (eSOPH) to prepare for your background investigation. You will receive a link to create an account and begin answering questions and uploading required documents. The background investigation reviews up to 10-years of history. You will work with a representative of the background investigators team to help you complete and review this process. The sooner you complete eSOPH the faster your application will move through the recruitment process.
5. Background Investigation
When you have successfully finished your eSOPH you will be assigned a background investigator to complete your investigation. Background investigations often take up to 30 business days, though, may vary based on workload and the responsiveness of your references. Your background investigation will include an interview with your investigator. More information about the background investigation may be found in
OAR 259-008-0015
.
6. Conditional Offer
The institutions to which you applied to will review your background and make a hiring decision. They will send you a conditional offer in order to begin the medical process. We do not recommend making job or location changes based on the conditional offer.
7. Medical processes
  • Physical and drug screening
The institution will work with you to arrange a physical and drug screening. The drug screening includes marijuana. The department will pay for your physical and drug screening. More information about the standards can be found here:
DPSST Physical Standards
  • Psychological Assessment
You will be required to pass a psychological assessment with a third party licensed psychologist. Your recruiter will send you the provider’s forms to complete, sign, and return. The psychologist will provide an account for online testing that you will take at the facility. Upon completing the online testing, you will be scheduled for a 1-hour zoom appointment with the doctor. The psychologist will make a recommendation on your qualifications to hold a public safety position.
8. Offer
If you are recommended for a public safety position by the psychologist, you will be given an official offer including your pay, start date, and other relevant information.
9. Welcome to your new career!
