What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Technician position at Department of Corrections?
This position is located in the DC Department of Corrections (DOC), Education Division. DOC ensures public safety for citizens of the District by providing an orderly, safe, secure, and humane environment for the confinement of pretrial detainees and sentenced inmates, while providing meaningful opportunities for community reintegration. This position functions as a Library Technician of a small law reference library, providing technical support by performing a wide variety of services to residents such as primary source material mandated by law, electronic research systems and other support of library related operations. Collaborates with D.C. Public Library (DCPL) staff, who will be responsible for the leisure library services, in which both are in support of the DOC's educational programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides library services and references to legal services in accordance with prescribed guidelines and performs acquisitions duties. Ensures that all legal reference material is kept up-to-date by acquiring updated versions of the electronic legal research systems that are provided to the resident population. Assesses feedback from DOC staff and residents, in determining which law library materials to acquire for various education programs. Explains the general arrangement and resources of the law library to users and assists in locating and selecting legal materials through available electronic systems and any available legal reference collections. Monitors resident clerks (legal assistants) in the provision of assistance to other residents for legal research. Provides training to resident clerks in legal research and maintenance of pertinent records.
Provides assistance to residents and resident clerks in resolving problems with, research, explanation of institutional rules and regulations, etc. Refers residents to appropriate sources for assistance. Reviews DOC College and Career Readiness mailbox daily to respond to and supply the requested law library information in a paper-based format. Reports to each housing unit to supply the responses to the requesting unit. Monitors and updates spreadsheets used to record law library materials delivered to each resident. Observes the behavior of assigned resident clerks to detect potential security problems and report observations to appropriate officials. Works with DCPL staff to ensure cohesiveness and resolve issues that may arise. Executes and controls funding for library expenditures and revises the Law Library schedule as necessary working in conjunction with DCPL librarians.
Qualifications and Education
Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements.

Physical Demands
The work is generally sedentary, work activities involve walking, stooping, kneeling, reaching and frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds, or occasionally up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment
Work is performed in an institutional office setting and normal safety precautions. Law Librarian technician is also responsible for visiting designated housing units to deliver requested legal researched information.
