The Supervisor of Academic Instruction, CF (SAi) serves under the leadership of the Central Program Services Program Director (Developmental Disabilities-Safety) and the supervision of the Supervisor of Correctional Education Programs (SCEP) to assist in the planning, development, and implementation of two federally-funded grant programs: Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2003 (IDEA 2004) amended through Every Student Succeeds Act of December 2015-Public Law 114-95 and the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), Title II: Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA)-Public Law 113-128.

Working Conditions

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must possess and maintain sufficient strength, agility, endurance, and sensory ability to perform the duties contained within this duty statement. This position has ongoing responsibility for the protection and safeguarding of the public and property, and regular and substantial contact with forensic individuals. As a condition of employment, incumbents are required to and capable of responding to emergency situations and provide a level of service to the public such that the safety of the public and of property is not jeopardized. Employees will be required to perform the following essential functions: must be able to lift 50 pounds without assistance; must be able to participate in client containment, intervention, or restraint; must have the ability to work extended hours if so needed.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: The SAI is responsible for maintaining order and supervising the conduct of students; maintaining the safety of persons and property; and planning, developing, and ensuring the implementation of classroom instruction and management to ensure the achievement of adult students using evidence-based practices and recognized instructional strategies to create a learning environment for students to achieve their learning goals. The SAI is responsible for monitoring education program activities to ensure activities and instruction build appropriate social emotional skills and support the students as they develop academic proficiency.The SAI ensures the safety of public, staff, and forensic clients, which may include, but not limited to: escorting forensic clients in the facility; distributing and accounting for all training equipment and supplies to prevent their use as weapons; inspecting facilities to identify security breaches that could lead to the escape of forensic client; and observing and intervening in forensic client behaviors that may injure people, damage property, or signal impending escape attempts. Required to maintain personal safety by wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensuring that PPE is in good, working condition.

Department Information

The California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is the agency through which the State of California provides services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities.

These disabilities include intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism and related conditions. Services are provided through state-operated developmental centers and community facilities, and contracts with 21 nonprofit regional centers. The regional centers serve as a local resource to help find and access the services and supports available to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.
