Job Description
NYC Department of Finance (DOF) is responsible for administering the tax revenue laws of the city fairly, efficiently, and transparently to instill public confidence and encourage compliance while providing exceptional customer service.
The Sheriff’s Office serves and enforces court mandates, orders of protection, warrants, decrees, and property seizures. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office conducts criminal investigations of real property fraud, tax crimes, and the trafficking of illegal and untaxed tobacco products and synthetic narcotics, and monitors defendants referred by the courts for electronic monitoring.
The Sheriff's Office is seeking an experienced Accountant to perform professional accounting work, conduct audits related to revenue within the office of the Sheriff; work independently or with others in executing responsible accounting.
This role requires attention to detail, and proficiency in accounting systems to support the financial operations and enforcement activities of the Sheriff's Office effectively. Key responsibilities include processing, reconciling, and maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with state and local regulations, and providing detailed financial reporting. Under general direction, with wide latitude for the exercise of independent initiative and judgment, performs exceptionally difficult and still more responsible, analytic or specialized administrative work.
Responsibilities:
- Reviews financial records of the audit team, Income Execution, County offices, and other financial records as assigned.
- Manage, maintain and deposit checks that are processed internally and externally.
- Conduct and maintain reports for all revenue within the office of the Sheriff.
- Review and track all bank statements to ensure efficiency and accuracy.
- Manage all accounting transactions
- Manage balance sheets and audit financial transactions of county offices.
- When appropriate prepare financial reports county offices in the absence of personnel.
- Comply with financial policies and regulations set by the Department of Finance.
- Review current procedures and train staff as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in accounting, including one course each in advanced accounting and auditing; or
2. A valid New York State Certified Public Accountant license.
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, at least one year of experience as an Accountant - Assignment Level I or at least two years of satisfactory full-time professional accounting or auditing experience.

Residency Requirement
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
